This study aimed to analyze students’ difficulties in beginning reading in Grade III at SDN 01 Anjongan. The focus consisted of three indicators, namely lack of reading fluency, frequent reading errors, and difficulty distinguishing letters with similar shapes. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. The subjects were 23 Grade III students at SDN 01 Anjongan. Data were collected through an individual beginning-reading test and analyzed descriptively by identifying the types of difficulties experienced by each student. The results showed that 11 students read slowly, 14 students still spelled out words, and 13 students repeated words or parts of the text. In the indicator of reading errors, 8 students experienced difficulties in word segmentation and 7 students paid insufficient attention to punctuation marks. In addition, 11 students experienced difficulty distinguishing similar letters, particularly b-d and m-n. The findings indicate that beginning-reading difficulties are still found among some Grade III students and require appropriate practice and individual guidance.
