Abstract

Coastal communities are moving from having an economy dominated by traditional industries to economies dominated by services and tourism. This study attempts to analyze the growth of tourism-focused research within coastal communities. This study uses a qualitative approach and incorporates systematic mapping and bibliometric analysis between the years 2011 to 2025. The results indicate that the last decade, especially the years following 2020, show a rapid growth of interest in research, especially of a more participatory nature, in relation to sustainability and the development of coastal communities. The three research domains constitute an interrelated and participatory process involving community empowerment, sustainable coastal tourism, and sustainable destinational development. Community-based sustainable coastal tourism development is perceived as an interrelated process incorporating social, economic and environmental dimensions. In most of the researched articles, qualitative approaches were predominant, and in developed tourism research, quantitative and mixed approaches were underutilized. Most of the research was conducted in Southeast Asia, specifically among the coastal communities of Thailand and Indonesia. The study conclusions show the predominance of these countries in this research area, as well as the need to expand tourism research to other countries.
