Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global and national health problem, with anemia commonly observed in TB patients due to chronic inflammation affecting iron metabolism and erythropoiesis. Hemoglobin levels are thought to influence clinical outcomes, including the potential impact on the length of hospital stay; however, the correlation between anemia severity and hospitalization duration in pulmonary TB patients remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the correlation between hemoglobin levels and length of hospital stay among pulmonary tuberculosis patients at Rumah Sakit Islam Purwokerto. An analytic observational study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted using medical record data of hospitalized pulmonary TB patients who met the inclusion criteria. Hemoglobin levels were categorized into mild, moderate, and severe anemia, while length of hospital stay was classified as short (≤5 days) and prolonged (>5 days) based on the third quartile (Q3). Bivariate analysis using the Fisher-Freeman-Halton Exact test showed no significant correlation between hemoglobin levels and length of hospital stay (p = 0.123), which was consistent with multivariate logistic regression analysis after adjustment for potential confounding variables (p = 0.172). In conclusion, hemoglobin levels were not significantly associated with length of hospital stay, suggesting that hospitalization duration is influenced by multiple factors and not solely determined by anemia severity. Keywords: Pulmonary Tuberculosis, Hemoglobin, Anemia, Length of Hospital Stay.
