Abstract

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) presents a complex global disease burden influenced by genetic predisposition and environmental triggers, yet localized epidemiological profiling in rapidly industrializing suburban centers remains sparse. Identifying familial atopic patterns in secondary healthcare settings is critical to bridging the diagnostic gap between advanced genomic models and practical bedside triage. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the distribution of familial atopic history, biological sex, and age profiles among patients diagnosed with AD at RSU Fikri Medika Kosambi General Hospital, Karawang, from December 2024 to April 2025. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional quantitative design was employed. Secondary clinical data were extracted from 57 medical records at the Dermatology Outpatient Clinic using consecutive sampling based on explicit eligibility criteria. Variables including age, sex, and first-degree familial atopy were evaluated using univariate statistical analysis in SPSS Version 28.0. Findings: A positive family history of atopy was identified in 71.9% (n=41) of cases. Biological sex distribution was virtually balanced, with females accounting for 50.9% (n=29) and males 49.1% (n=28). Early pediatric age brackets predominated the cohort, with infants (12.3%, n=7) and toddlers (26.3%, n=15) cumulatively comprising 38.6% (n=22) of presentations, followed by adults at 29.9% (n=17). Significance: Familial genetic heritability serves as a primary diagnostic indicator in suburban industrial clinical cohorts. Routine screening for family history provides an efficient, low-cost surrogate diagnostic tool for secondary hospitals, guiding early pediatric barrier repair interventions and public health strategies in environmentally exposed populations.
