Abstract

Immigration and security issues along the US-Mexico border were one of the key issues in Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Despite widespread criticism and opposition, the policy proceeded with the release of Executive Order 13767. The purpose of this study is to examine the policy-making process behind the US-Mexico wall from 2015 to 2017. This research employs qualitative analysis techniques and utilizes secondary data. This study applies Foreign Policy Decision Making theory. Findings reveal that domestic security and national interest serve as the trigger that influenced the formulation of the Trump Wall policy. The border with Mexico, a primary route for immigrants, has become a security threat due to the smuggling of weapons and drugs. Although concerns remain about the strained relationship between the US and Mexico, the US is one of the wealthiest and militarily most powerful nations and can therefore back its decisions. Various entities such as the bureaucracy, the Republican Party, and military-sector companies helped promote Trump's policies, ensuring their continued implementation. This paper complements the use of FPDM Theory, namely the US-Mexico border wall.
