Abstract

Appropriate complementary feeding is essential to meet the increasing nutritional requirements of infants aged 7–12 months and to support optimal growth. However, inadequate complementary feeding practices remain a challenge in improving infant nutritional status, particularly body weight. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of innovative complementary feeding based on locally processed marine fish in increasing body weight among infants aged 7–12 months at Papusungan Community Health Center, Bitung. A pre-experimental study with a one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted involving 30 infants selected through total sampling. The intervention consisted of providing innovative complementary feeding prepared from locally processed marine fish for 14 consecutive days. Body weight was measured before and after the intervention, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired t-test. The results showed that the mean body weight increased from 8.37 ± 0.69 kg before the intervention to 9.10 ± 0.82 kg afterward. A total of 26 infants (86.7%) experienced weight gain, while four infants (13.3%) showed no increase. The paired t-test revealed a statistically significant difference in body weight before and after the intervention (p < 0.001). These findings indicate that innovative complementary feeding based on locally processed marine fish is an effective, affordable, and sustainable nutritional strategy for improving body weight among infants and may support community-based nutrition programs.
