Abstract

Mosquitoes are small-sized insects that undergo four developmental stages (egg, larva, pupa, and adult). The use of the larvicide temephos (abate) as an inhibitor of mosquito larvae development has side effects if used over a long period. Therefore, a natural larvicide, rukam fruit (Flacourtia rukam Z. & M.), is used because it contains larvicidal compounds, namely alkaloids and flavonoids. The purpose of study is to determine the effect of rukam fruit extract on mosquito larvae mortality at extract concentrations of 15%, 20%, and 25%. This research was a quantitative study using an experimental design. The variables used include the independent variable, which was the concentration of ethanol extract of rukam fruit, and the dependent variable, which was Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae. The sample used consisted of 300 Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae. This research was conducted at the Chemistry Laboratory of NHM University and the Entomology Laboratory of Airlangga University, Surabaya. The data analysis was carried out using SPSS with the Kruskal-Wallis statistical test. The results of this study showed that rukam fruit extract at the lowest concentration  of  15%  was  able  to  kill  100%  of  Aedes  aegypti larvae before 24 hours. Kruskal-Wallis data analysis showed a significance value of p = 0.017 (p < 0.05), indicating that there was an effect of rukam fruit extract on the mortality of Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae. The mechanism of alkaloid compounds involves inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, leading to a loss of muscle coordination, while flavonoid compounds act as respiratory inhibitors.
