Bait selection is one of the key factors influencing the effectiveness of bottom longline fishing operations. This study aimed to determine the most effective bait type for catching longtail red snapper (Etelis coruscans) landed at Mayangan Coastal Fishing Port, Probolinggo. The research employed an experimental fishing method using a Randomized Block Design (RBD) consisting of three bait treatments, namely fringescale sardine (Sardinella fimbriata), Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger spp.), and scad (Decapterus spp.), with nine replications for each treatment. The data were analyzed using normality and homogeneity tests, followed by One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test. The results showed that bait type had a significant effect on the catch of longtail red snapper (Sig. = 0.040 < 0.05). The fringescale sardine bait produced the highest catch (1,378.51 kg), followed by scad (1,231.86 kg) and Indian mackerel (1,044.43 kg). The LSD test indicated a significant difference only between fringescale sardine and Indian mackerel bait. Therefore, fringescale sardine was identified as the most effective bait for increasing the catch of longtail red snapper using bottom longline fishing gear.
