Abstract

General Background Warehousing functions as a critical node in supply chain logistics by controlling physical product distribution imbalances between market supply and consumer demand. Specific Background Foodservice distribution centers face significant operational challenges when managing various product categories with differing expiry dates and high turnover rates within limited storage facilities. Knowledge Gap Randomly placing newly arrived goods alongside existing inventory without considering movement frequency creates severe operational backtracking, prolonging picking durations and complicating manual stock opname processes. Aims This study redesigns a foodservice distribution warehouse layout by combining relational mapping with movement-based storage principles to minimize material handling distances. Results The analysis categorized products into five distinct zones: receiving and putaway, fast-moving, slow-moving, inventory, and branch deposits. Fast-moving goods, requiring high operational mobility, were systematically relocated adjacent to the receiving area based on a stringent relational evaluation. This specific spatial reorganization formed a linear material flow, eliminating random pallet placement and preventing overlapping storage across the facility. Novelty The research provides a direct application of relational mapping integrated with movement-based classification to resolve random storage bottlenecks in a high-turnover food distribution environment. Implications Implementing this structured spatial arrangement drastically reduces physical backtracking, shortens picking durations, minimizes stock discrepancy risks, and increases overall facility productivity. DOCX+ 4 Highlights: Random storage placement causes severe operational backtracking and significantly prolongs order picking durations within limited distribution facilities. Categorizing products into five distinct spatial zones strictly separates high-turnover items from slow-moving inventory and branch deposits. Relocating high-mobility goods adjacent to receiving areas eliminates redundant material handling movements and accelerates manual stock opname procedures. Keywords: Material Handling, Fast Moving, Spatial Reorganization, Stock Opname, Movement Frequency
