Although social and emotional learning in elementary schools has been extensively studied, research on the representation of social awareness and relationship skills of characters with learning limitations in children’s films remains limited. This study aimed to describe the social awareness and relationship skills of the character Ondeng in the film Jembatan Pensil using the competency framework of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). The study employed a qualitative approach with a content analysis method. Data were collected through nonparticipant observation and documentation by repeatedly viewing the film and noting scenes relevant to the research focus. The analysis identified 46 indicator occurrences across 17 scene units, distributed relatively evenly between social awareness, with 22 occurrences, and relationship skills, with 24 occurrences. The indicator of empathy and caring appeared most frequently, in 11 scene units, whereas the indicator of building and maintaining positive relationships appeared least frequently, in three scene units. Ondeng’s caring was expressed through tangible actions regardless of the treatment he received, with support from his teacher, father, local youth, and the community. This representation shows that the character’s learning limitations do not negate his social-emotional strengths. This study contributes to the application of CASEL as a lens for narrative analysis and provides a reference for elementary school teachers to recognize and discuss students’ social-emotional strengths. Further research can extend the analysis to other characters and test its use in classroom instruction.
