Abstract

Work accidents in the shipping sector are still a problem, mostly influenced by unsafe actions. Crew members have a high risk of work accidents due to the complex nature of their job, so it’s necessary to identify factors related to unsafe actions. This study aims to analyze the relationship between knowledge, work experience, age, supervision, and the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) with unsafe actions among crew members on the Manado–Talaud route at Manado Sea Port, as a basis for developing efforts to improve occupational safety and health. The study used a cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach. The sample consisted of 45 respondents selected using total sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using Spearman's Rank correlation test with a significance level of α=0.05. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between knowledge and unsafe action (r= -0.361; p=0.015), supervision (r= -0.384; p=0.009), and availability of PPE (r= -0.317; p=0.034). The five variables have a negative relationship, which shows that the better the knowledge, length of service, age, supervisory, and availability of PPE, the lower the tendency of crew members to perform unsafe actions. Conversely, length of service (r= -0.112; p=0.463) and age (r= -0.218; p=0.151) do not show a significant relationship with unsafe actions. These results indicate that individual and organizational factors, particularly knowledge, supervision, and PPE availability, play a role in shaping safe work behavior.
