Abstract

Background: Clinical skills are essential competencies that medical students are expected to develop during clinical clerkship in accordance with the Indonesian Medical Doctor Competency Standards (SKDI).Aims:This study aimed to describe the perceived achievement of clinical skills competencies among clinical clerkship students at the Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University. Methods:A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 159 clinical clerkship students who had completed rotations in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Data were collected using a self-assessment questionnaire based on the 2012 SKDI clinical skills competencies at competency levels 3 and 4. Results: The highest mean score for level 3 competencies was found in the Surgery rotation (2.98), while the lowest was observed in Obstetrics and Gynecology. For level 4 competencies, the highest mean score was recorded in Pediatrics (3.58). Surgery demonstrated the largest proportion of clinical skills perceived to have achieved level 3 competency (41.7%). At level 4, only one clinical skill was perceived to have met the expected standard in each of the Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Obstetrics and Gynecology rotations. Conclusion:This study assessed clinical skills competency achievement from students' self-assessment. Most clinical clerkship students at the Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University perceived that they had achieved the expected competency levels; however, only a limited number of clinical skills were perceived to meet competency level 4 standards. These findings suggest the need for continuous curriculum evaluation, while objective assessments are required to confirm actual competency attainment.
