Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from impaired insulin secretion or action. Effective diabetes management relies heavily on self-management practices, such as dietary control, physical activity, treatment adherence, and blood glucose monitoring. However, the success of a client's self-management is also influenced by family support and the family's role in carrying out family health tasks—which include recognizing health problems, making decisions, caring for family members, modifying the environment, and utilizing healthcare facilities. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between family health tasks and self-management among diabetes mellitus clients at the Maesan Community Health Center (Puskesmas) in Bondowoso Regency. Methods: This study employed a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 742 individuals with diabetes mellitus, with a sample of 193 respondents selected using purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria. Research instruments included a family health tasks questionnaire (20 items) and a self-management questionnaire (35 items), both of which had undergone validity and reliability testing. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman’s Rho correlation test. Results: The results showed that the majority of respondents fell into the "good" category for family health tasks (56.5%) and the "fair" category for self-management (54.4%). The Spearman’s Rho test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.612, indicating a positive relationship of moderate strength between family health tasks and self-management among diabetes mellitus clients. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between family health tasks and self-management in diabetes mellitus clients. The better the execution of family health tasks, the better the client's self-management. This study highlights the importance of optimizing the family's role in supporting successful self-management for individuals with diabetes mellitus.
