Abstract

This research aims to describe the forms of expressive speech acts used by introverted and extroverted students during Indonesian language learning activities in class X Bisnis Digital 4 at SMKN 10 Surabaya. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method with a pragmatic approach. The data consisted of students’ utterances containing expressive speech acts, while the data were collected through observation, recording, and note-taking techniques. The data analysis was conducted through the processes of data reduction, data classification, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The findings revealed that both introverted and extroverted students produced various forms of expressive speech acts, including apologizing, praising, expressing gratitude, expressing happiness, complaining, criticizing, and expressing misunderstanding or doubt. However, differences were found in the way both personality types conveyed their expressions. Introverted students tended to use more careful, polite, and self-reflective utterances. They often expressed apologies, complaints, criticism, and misunderstandings using softer language and with greater consideration of the communication situation. In contrast, extroverted students tended to express their feelings more openly, spontaneously, and directly. Their expressive speech acts appeared more enthusiastic, particularly in praising, expressing gratitude, happiness, and giving criticism or suggestions. Therefore, personality characteristics influence students’ communication styles and the variation of expressive speech acts used during classroom interactions. These findings indicate that expressive speech acts are not only influenced by the context of communication but also by individual personality traits.
