This study aims to analyse the factors causing Year 5 pupils’ difficulties in understanding the Solar System module within the Natural Sciences subject at GMIT 024 Likwatang Primary School. This study employs a qualitative method, specifically a descriptive qualitative approach. The data collection techniques used in this study involved the following instruments: observation, interviews and documentation. The data analysis techniques employed comprised data collection, data reduction, data presentation and drawing of conclusions. The results of this study indicate that the factors causing pupils’ learning difficulties stem from internal factors, including pupils’ difficulty in recalling lessons already delivered by the teacher, boredom whilst following lessons, a lack of motivation when the teacher explains the material at the front of the class, and low interest in learning. Meanwhile, the external factors causing these difficulties include the school environment, such as inadequate teaching methods and a lack of suitable learning facilities, as well as minimal communication between parents, form tutors and pupils regarding pupils’ learning progress at school. In conclusion, pupils exhibited difficulties during IPAS lessons. The causes include both internal and external factors; internal factors encompass differences in thinking abilities, learning styles, boredom and a lack of motivation. Meanwhile, external factors include teachers’ teaching methods lacking variety, the unavailability of learning resources, and a lack of family support.
