The erosion of the value of modesty al-hayâ’ in the contemporary era presents a moral challenge driven by the rise of social media, cultural shifts, and changing norms of decency. This study aims to examine the values of al-hayâ’ based on Sayyid Qutb’s interpretation in Tafsir Fī Ẓilāl al-Qur’ān and their relevance to the challenges of modern life. Employing a qualitative methodology, the study utilizes library research and a thematic (maudhū‘ī) exegetical approach. Primary data sources include the Qur’an and Tafsir Fī Ẓilāl al-Qur’ān, focusing on Surah an-Nūr [24]: 30–31, Surah al-Qaṣaṣ [28]: 25, and Surah al-Aḥzāb [33]: 33. Data were analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method. The findings indicate that the values of al-hayâ’ in Sayyid Qutb’s interpretation encompass three main aspects: guarding one’s gaze and covering the awrah (intimate parts of the body); maintaining decency and boundaries in interactions between men and women; and preserving personal honor by avoiding tabarruj (ostentatious display of beauty). These values remain relevant in the contemporary context, particularly in addressing the influence of social media, permissive culture, and the weakening of norms regarding decency. The implementation of al-hayâ’ values can be achieved through moral education, family guidance, and the strengthening of ethics in both social interactions and the digital realm. Thus, al-hayâ’ is understood not merely as a sense of shame, but as a moral principle that plays a vital role in safeguarding personal honor and shaping the character of a Muslim possessing noble morals.
