Abstract

Jambi Province is one of the areas on the island of Sumatra that have potential source Power coal Enough large . Coal in Jambi is formed from sediment rock sediment. Identification distribution coal is stages important in activity exploration source mineral resources, especially coal. This process aim For know existence coal, good from aspect location, depth, thickness layers, as well as wide its distribution in a region. If not existence identification distribution coal cause activity mining walk without clear data base. As a result, exploration become No efficient, cost increased, and the results production not optimal because location mine could be wrong target. Due to the lack of data on the geology and geometry of the coal distribution of the research area. Therefore, the author wishes to conduct research in the Sungai Gelam District, Muaro Jambi Regency, Jambi Province. The research area that has been seen from the regional geology is included in the Muara Enim Formation, this formation is of Late Miocene - Pliocene age seen from its stratigraphic position. This study aims to determine the geological conditions that include aspects of geomorphology, stratigraphy, geological structure and determine the direction of coal distribution with geological conditions. Based on the results of field and laboratory observations, analyzing relief samples using petrographic rock sections, there are 3 rock units included in the Muara Enim formation, namely the Muara Enim Claystone unit, the Muara Enim Siltstone unit, and the Muara Enim Sandstone unit. The results of observations of the research area show that geomorphologically there are 2 land form units, namely the Denudational Sloping Hill Landform Unit (D1) and the Denudational Undulating Lowland Landform Unit (D2). To determine the direction of coal distribution, drilling data is needed and then a cross-section is made that presents a cross-section of the earth based on exploration data, especially drilling data, so that it can show the position, depth, thickness, and continuity of coal layers (seams) from one point to another.
