Preeclampsia (PE) is a multisystem disorder that complicates 2 to 8 % of pregnancies worldwide and is a major cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Objective: To evaluate biochemical biomarkers of kidney and liver function and inflammatory biomarkers (TNF-α and IL-6) in women with severe pre-eclampsia and compare them with healthy pregnant controls. Methods: The present cross-sectional study was performed on 70 pregnant women with preeclampsia and 30 healthy pregnant controls with gestational ages >20 weeks. Serum levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and Cystine C were estimated by Elisa-based assays and liver and kidney function Biochemical tests were performed using spectrophotometer according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Results: Significant difference was observed in blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine in severe pre-eclampsia as compared with healthy controls (P < 0.001). Liver function tests and bilirubin was also significantly higher in severe preeclampsia (P < 0.001). In preeclamptic group, the levels of TNF- α and IL-6 were significantly increased. Conclusion: Severe preeclampsia was associated with significant changes in kidney and liver biochemical parameters and increased inflammatory biomarkers.
