Abstract

Effective communication through the Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation (SBAR) framework is a key strategy for enhancing patient safety, particularly in emergency and critical care services. Optimal implementation of SBAR communication is closely linked to nurses' motivation to deliver quality nursing care. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between SBAR communication in emergency and critical care services and nurses' work motivation at Dr. Moewardi Regional Hospital. This study employed a quantitative, analytic correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The research sample comprised 48 nurses working in the Emergency Department (IGD) and Intensive Care Unit/High Care Unit (ICU/HCU), selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using questionnaires for SBAR communication and nurse work motivation, both of which satisfied validity and reliability testing. Data analysis was conducted using the Spearman Rank correlation test with a significance level of p<0.05. Most respondents demonstrated SBAR communication in the good category (81.3%) and work motivation in the high category (91.7%). The analysis revealed a statistically significant positive relationship between SBAR communication and nurses' work motivation (r=0.642, p<0.001), indicating that better SBAR communication correlates with higher work motivation among nurses. Therefore, strengthening SBAR communication through ongoing training and continuous supervision can serve as an effective strategy to boost nurse work motivation and improve the overall quality of nursing care.
