Abstract

Problematic social media use (PSMU) among adolescents involves loss of control over social media use. Adolescents keep scrolling although they recognize the negative consequences. This article analyzes the relationship between PSMU and adolescent mental health, reviews available psychotherapeutic approaches, and proposes a conceptual model of digital self-regulation. The author applied an integrative narrative literature review to journal articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, health agency reports, and academic theses published between 2021 and 2026. The synthesis produced three findings. First, the association of PSMU with anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, and emotion regulation difficulty is complex and varies across individuals. Second, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has the broadest evidence base, while mindfulness shows potential but relies on correlational studies. Third, platform features such as notifications and infinite scrolling sustain engagement, so interventions focused on the individual have limits. Based on this synthesis, the article proposes a five-stage model: digital awareness, cognitive restructuring, mindful pause, emotional substitution, and digital environment modification. The model remains conceptual and requires empirical testing before clinical application.Problematic social media use (PSMU) among adolescents involves loss of control over social media use.
