Abstract

Introduction: Because Gram-negative bacteria are oftenlinked to serious tooth illnesses like periodontitis, thedevelopment of natural-based oral therapies necessitatesthe use of potent antibacterial medicines. Objective: UsingEscherichia coli as a baseline model for Gram-negativebacterial pathogens, this study conducted to assess theantibacterial effectiveness of leaf extracts from Cynometraramiflora L. (Sala) and Muntingia calabura L. (JamaicanCherry), both separately and in combination. Methods: 96%ethanol was used to carry out the extraction process usingmaceration. The Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method wasused to assess the antibacterial activity. Sala and cherry leafsingle extracts as well as their mixtures at ratios of 25:75,50:50, and 75:25 made up the experimental groups. Thepositive and negative controls were 10% DMSO andtetracycline, respectively. Results: Compared to the single Jamaican Cherry leavesextract (12.33 mm), the single ethanol extract of Sala leavesshowed "very strong" antibacterial activity with a meaninhibition zone of 21.5 mm. On the other hand, theantagonistic impact of the two extract combinationsproduced lower inhibition zones between 12.5 and 13.0mm, which were unable to outperform the effectiveness ofthe single Sala extract.
