Abstract

ABSTRACT Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera Lam.) and butterfly pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea L.) contain flavonoid compounds that act as natural antioxidants capable of scavenging free radicals. This study aimed to formulate a lotion preparation containing a combination of moringa leaf and butterfly pea flower infusions and to evaluate the physical quality of the resulting formulation. Four lotion formulas were prepared, consisting of F0 as a positive control and F1–F3 with variations in the ratio of moringa leaf and butterfly pea flower infusions, namely F1 (2:2), F2 (3:1), and F3 (1:3). Physical quality evaluation included organoleptic test, pH measurement, spreadability, adhesiveness, viscosity, globule size, and centrifugation test. The results showed that all lotion formulas exhibited physical characteristics that met the quality requirements for topical preparations. Organoleptic evaluation indicated that F0 was white, F1 was bluish-green, F2 was green, and F3 was blue in color, with lotion form and strawberry odor. The pH values were 6.26 for F0, 6.37 for F1, 6.63 for F2, and 6.52 for F3. Spreadability ranged from 5–7 cm, adhesiveness was more than 4 seconds, and the average viscosity values were 4,024 cPs for F0, 2,124 cPs for F1, 2,921 cPs for F2, and 2,669 cPs for F3. Abstract

Oxidative stress can induce memory loss, which may be mitigated by antioxidants. Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera) and butterfly pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea) possess flavonoid chemicals that function as natural antioxidants. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of combined Moringa leaf and butterfly pea flower infusions on enhancing the memory of mice and to identify the optimal dosage. The research utilized male white mice (Mus musculus), categorized into six groups: a normal group, a negative control (aquadest), a positive control (Ginkgo biloba), and three treatment groups receiving various infusion doses. The procedure had three phases: acclimatization (T0), intraperitoneal administration of hyoscine butylbromide (T1), and therapy (T2). The manufacture of INDUK BUNTEL (an infusion of moringa leaves and butterfly pea flowers) was conducted using an infusion extraction method. Testing on test subjects was conducted utilizing the Radial Arm Maze methodology. The findings indicated that the infusion combination at dose III (100 mg/KgBW: 100 mg/KgBW) was the most efficacious in enhancing the memory of mice. The mean mistake rate in mice was 16.44%, representing the lowest score among the treatment groups. The one-way ANOVA test indicated no significant difference across treatment groups with three distinct dose combinations (p > 0.05).

Abstract

Indonesia, as a tropical country, has high exposure to ultraviolet radiation that can cause skin damage. Bandotan leaves (Ageratum conyzoides L.) contain flavonoids and tannins capable of absorbing UV radiation, thus having potential to be developed as a safer natural sunscreen agent. This study aimed to determine the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) values of 70% and 96% ethanol extracts of bandotan leaves using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method and to evaluate the effect of different ethanol solvent concentrations on the SPF values of the extracts. The study used dried bandotan leaf simplicia extracted by maceration method with 70% and 96% ethanol. The obtained extracts were subjected to standardization and phytochemical screening. SPF values were determined in vitro using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a wavelength range of 290–320 nm with extract concentrations of 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 ppm, and calculated using the Mansur method. The results showed that the SPF values of the 70% ethanol extract were 1.1550, 1.8349, 2.4004, 3.3868, and 4.5036, respectively, while the 96% ethanol extract produced SPF values of 1.0821, 2.0559, 2.9325, 3.8779, and 5.1098, categorized from no protection to moderate protection. The difference in ethanol solvent concentration (70% and 96%) had a significant effect on the SPF values of bandotan leaf extract (p < 0.05). Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the 96% ethanol extract of bandotan leaves (Ageratum conyzoides L.) is more effective than the 70% ethanol extract in producing photoprotective activity and therefore has potential to be developed as a natural ingredient in sunscreen formulations.
