Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between self-control and social media addiction among Generation Z university students. The rapid development of digital technology has made social media an inseparable part of daily life, especially for Generation Z who are considered digital natives. However, excessive use of social media may lead to addictive behaviors that negatively affect psychological well-being, academic performance, and social functioning. This research employed a quantitative correlational design with 354 undergraduate students as participants. Sampling was conducted using a convenience sampling technique. Self-control was measured using the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS), while social media addiction was measured using a Social Media Addiction Scale adapted from previous studies. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s rho correlation test due to non-normal data distribution. The results revealed a significant negative correlation between self-control and social media addiction (r = -0.109 ; p = 0.041). This indicates that higher levels of self-control are associated with lower levels of social media addiction. The findings emphasize the importance of strengthening self-regulation skills among university students to prevent problematic social media use. Future research is recommended to explore mediating or moderating variables such as social support and psychological well-being.
