Abstract

Hydroponics is a modern agricultural innovation that uses water and nutrient solutions as a substitute for soil, making it more efficient, resource-efficient, and environmentally friendly, and allowing it to be implemented on small plots of land. These advantages make hydroponics a strategic solution for supporting food security, particularly through the involvement of the younger generation to foster innovation and creativity in agriculture. This Community Service (PKM) activity aims to introduce the concept of modern agriculture to the younger generation through hydroponic plant cultivation at SDIT Arafah in Padang. The activity targets elementary school students as part of an effort to instill knowledge, interest, and concern for agriculture from an early age. The implementation method included a coordination phase, the construction of a simple hydroponic system, outreach through lectures, educational videos, and hands-on demonstrations, as well as evaluation using pre- and post-tests. Monitoring was conducted 15 days after planting to assess the program’s sustainability and plant growth. The results of the activity showed an increase in students’ understanding of the basic concepts of hydroponics, the types of plants that can be grown, and the principles of plant nutrition and care. The students’ enthusiasm was evident in their active participation during the activity and their ability to explain the principles of hydroponics. Monitoring revealed optimal growth of the lettuce plants as well as consistent maintenance of the system by students and teachers. Overall, this program has been effective in enhancing students’ knowledge, interest, and positive attitudes toward modern agriculture. This initiative has the potential to serve as a model for contextual education that supports the development of a younger generation committed to agricultural innovation, environmental sustainability, and future food security
