Abstract

This study examines the value system, social structure, and cultural identity of the Lampung Pepadun indigenous community, with a particular focus on the Sungkay Bunga Mayang clan. The Pepadun custom is known for its complex yet egalitarian social system, characterized by the absence of a centralized authority and replaced by a balancing mechanism within extended family structures, known as the concept of the “family kingdom.” Traditional titles (adok) such as Sunan, Pengiran, Minak, and Suttan are not merely symbols of status but serve as integral components of social identity and familial history. The begawi ceremony functions as a formal gateway into customary recognition, while the moral value of Piil Pesenggiri serves as a foundational principle for upholding personal honor, integrity, and social harmony. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method to understand how local wisdom is actualized amidst social change. Data collection techniques include participatory observation in customary events, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, and literature review. The findings reveal that the Pepadun customary system is not static; rather, it is adaptive to changing times while maintaining its core structure. Customary law functions as a mechanism for social regulation based on deliberation (musyawarah), transmitted through oral traditions (tutur adat), and reinforced by a system of social sanctions (tegak). This study affirms that the local wisdom embodied by the Pepadun community is both a cultural asset and a social system that remains highly relevant in strengthening identity resilience amid the challenges of globalization.
