Religious moderation has become an important issue in the lives of contemporary Muslims, particularly amid increasing religious polarization, intolerance, extremism, and changes in religious communication spaces resulting from digital technological development. Within Islamic discourse, moderation is closely related to the concept of wasathiyyah, although the two concepts are not entirely identical. Wasathiyyah has a theological foundation rooted in the Qur’an and refers to principles of balance, justice, excellence, and proportionality in human life. Meanwhile, the interpretation of QS al-Baqarah [2]: 143 indicates that wasathiyyah can serve as a Qur’anic foundation for developing religious moderation that places justice, balance, and public benefit as its primary orientations. This article aims to analyze religious moderation as a manifestation of maqasid al-shari’ah while reconstructing the concept of wasathiyyah in response to the dynamics of contemporary Muslim life. This study employs a qualitative method using a library research approach. The data sources consist of the Qur’an, Islamic literature, studies on maqasid al-shari’ah, and relevant scholarly journal articles. The analysis is conducted descriptively and analytically by connecting the concepts of wasathiyyah, religious moderation, maqasid al-shari’ah, and maslahah. The findings indicate that wasathiyyah should not be understood merely as a middle position between two extremes, but rather as an ethical principle encompassing justice, balance, proportionality, and public benefit. Maqasid al-shari’ah provides a teleological orientation to these principles through the realization of human welfare and the protection of fundamental human needs. Based on this construction, this article positions wasathiyyah as an ethical principle, maqasid al-shari’ah as a teleological orientation, and religious moderation as a form of social praxis in contemporary Muslim life. This reconstruction broadens the understanding of religious moderation from merely a strategy for dealing with extremism into an Islamic paradigm oriented toward justice, balance, public benefit, and the protection of human life.
