Abstract

Road pavement deterioration affects safety, riding comfort, and transportation performance, particularly at intersections that experience continuous mixed traffic. This study evaluates pavement condition and examines the relationship between traffic volume and pavement damage at the President University Roundabout, Jababeka, Cikarang, Indonesia. A quantitative field-survey approach was applied. Pavement condition was assessed using the Surface Distress Index (SDI) along the approximately 706.71 m roundabout circumference, divided into seven pavement segments. Traffic volume was measured manually at four observation sections on 12, 14, and 15 June 2026 and converted to Passenger Car Units per hour (PCU/h) using passenger-car-equivalent factors from the Indonesian Highway Capacity Manual (MKJI). For correlation analysis, the seven pavement segments were grouped into four traffic sections, with averaged SDI values used for Sections B and D. The resulting SDI values were 205, 170, 185, and 65 for Sections A–D, respectively, while average traffic volumes ranged from 2,770.19 to 2,805.63 PCU/h. Pearson correlation produced r = 0.996 and p = 0.004, indicating a very strong positive linear association that is statistically significant at the 5% level. However, the analysis is based on four section-level observations; therefore, the result should be interpreted as site-specific evidence of association rather than proof of causation. The findings support prioritizing pavement maintenance in sections with high SDI values and considering traffic demand in pavement management.
