Abstract

Network topology changes, such as link failures and recoveries, can affect the convergence process of dynamic routing protocols, thereby impacting network service quality. The ability of a routing protocol to adapt to topology changes is essential for maintaining stable data communication, particularly in Local Area Network (LAN) environments. This study analyzes the performance of Routing Information Protocol Version 2 (RIPv2) under network topology changes based on convergence time, path analysis (traceroute) results, and Quality of Service (QoS) parameters according to the TIPHON standard. We employed a quantitative, experimental approach through simulation using Cisco Packet Tracer. The network topology consisted of three routers, three switches, and nine computers, tested under three scenarios: normal condition (all links up), link failure, and link recovery. The results showed that under normal conditions, the network achieved a 100% success rate, 0% packet loss, a delay of 19.33–20.00 ms, and jitter of 2.00–2.67 ms, with all communication traversing 3 hops, as shown by the traceroute results. In the link-failure scenario, packet loss increased to 40%, 27%, and 18%, with convergence times of 4.00, 8.00, and 9.00 seconds, respectively, while delay (23.34–25.00 ms) and jitter (2.69–6.25 ms) increased only slightly and remained in the Excellent category; the traceroute results confirmed the addition of one hop (from 3 to 4 hops) as direct evidence of the switch to an alternative path. In the link-recovery scenario, the network returned to the main path after 18.00 seconds of convergence, with 60% packet loss occurring entirely within that single transient window, rather than from repeated testing. This study also identifies methodological limitations in packet-count-based convergence-time measurement and in using ICMP traffic as a QoS proxy, and it provides recommendations for future research.
