Slum settlements are a complex urban environmental problem, particularly in peri-urban areas such as Meranti Pandak Urban Village, Pekanbaru City, Indonesia. This study aimed to identify the factors contributing to slum conditions through a literature review and interviews with two informants: the local neighborhood association head (RT) and the Head of the Pekanbaru City Environmental and Sanitation Agency. Relevant literature was identified through Google Scholar and GARUDA based on its relevance to slum settlements, socioeconomic factors, physical environmental conditions, and urban settlement management. The findings identified six main factors contributing to slum conditions: urbanization and migration, inadequate environmental infrastructure and facilities, government service provision, low household economic conditions, poor physical conditions of settlements, and residents’ social attachment to their living environment. The contribution of this study lies in its integrated analysis of social, economic, physical environmental, and institutional factors by combining the literature review with the perspectives of local stakeholders to understand slum conditions in Meranti Pandak Urban Village. These findings may inform the planning and improvement of settlements in ways that are responsive to local social, economic, and environmental conditions.
