Bandits, prostitutes, and artists are social groups that frequently ignored by the historians. Potentially their social position as non-elite class causes its marginalization. Hence, in the development of history as science that headed to democratization, all social groups are seen as having equal opportunities to write their history. Facing the superiority of Dutch military in the Indonesian National Revolution period (1945-1950), the Indonesian army was forced to mobilize all resources. In that context, bandits, prostitutes, and artists were involved in the struggle for independence. Their contribution is very important, but in an atmosphere of historical studies that highlight the elite, their role seems to be marginalized. The independence war in East Java records band of bandits, prostitutes and artists who were mobilized and utilized for various purposes. Through various roles in accordance with their "skills", it provides support for the independence. The duty were very risk to their lives, but they doing it voluntarily. Ironically, their heroism only recorded in the old archives and forgotten after independence. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17977/um020v12i22017p128
