Abstract

Red chili cultivation in Padang Bujur Village, Padang Bolak District, faces aphid (Aphis gossypii) infestation and heavy reliance on synthetic pesticides. Locally abundant balakka leaves (Phyllanthus emblica L.) offer a potential botanical pesticide for agricultural extension. This study designed an extension activity, characterized the target farmers, and assessed acceptance and adoption of the proposed innovation. A descriptive quantitative study was conducted from April to May 2026 using interviews and closed questionnaires with 30 red chili farmers; questionnaire responses were analyzed using a Likert scale. The extension components received an acceptance score of 86.18%, classified as highly appropriate. Following the activity, 12 farmers (40.00%) adopted the balakka-leaf botanical pesticide, exceeding the target of 10 farmers (33.33%). These findings support the feasibility of the extension design and illustrate the potential to integrate locally available botanical resources into environmentally friendly pest-management extension.
