Abstract

Data from the International Diabetes Federation revealed annual increases in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus, which require special attention. Implementation of the ‘back to nature’ trend presents opportunities to overcome this problem. As a medicinal plant, Faloak is widely used by people in Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia. This study aimed to evaluate in vivo and in vitro anti-hyperglycemic activity of the bark of Sterculia quadrifida, known as Faloak. In vivo evaluation used sucrose-induced male mice. Measurements of glucose level employed a glucometer and data were analyzed statistically. Demonstrating anti-hyperglycemic activity of the bark of Faloak decoct, results showed doses 1.67 and 3.3 g/kg BW reduced glucose levels by 62.2% and 56.9%, respectively. In vitro examination of Faloak decoct at various concentrations used alpha glucosidase (sucrose) enzymatic reaction. Results of in vitro examinations demonstrated of Faloak bark decoct inhibited alpha glucosidase (sucrose) activity by 42.09 ± 4.39%. Further testing on humans is needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract

During the Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, valid information was crucial and electronic health literacy (EHL) plays a significant role in public adherence to health protocols. This study aimed to evaluate the pattern of COVID-19 information-seeking, and the association between EHL, COVID-19 knowledge, and health protocol adherence among patients with COVID-19 during self-quarantine. Data were collected through an online survey sent to self-quarantined COVID-19 patients during March – December 2020 in a sub-district in West Java. Spearman tests were used to evaluate the relationship between EHL with COVID-19 knowledge, and EHL with health protocol adherence. There were 56 respondents with more than half being female (58.9%), university graduates (64.3%) and having good health status level (57.1%). Social media were the commonest online sources. During self-isolation, the frequency of Internet use increased (i.e., every day) with information on vitamins and supplements as the most commonly searched. Respondents had high scores on EHL (mean= 20.0), knowledge (mean = 8.89/10, SD = 1.796), and adherence (mean = 26.98/30, SD = 3.066). This study found significant relationships between EHL and knowledge (p-value = 0.001, r = 0.436), and the adherence (p-value = 0.011, r = 0.339). In conclusion, EHL had a modest influence on COVID-19 knowledge and minor relationship with adherence to health protocols among self-quarantined patients with COVID-19.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) problem is still a challenge for Indonesia today. The World Health Organization reports that Indonesia is the third country with the highest TB burden globally. All component of society must take a role in dealing with the global TB problem to achieve Zero TB in 2050. As the implementation, the Pesantren 2 Primary Health Care conducted socialization in the Wali Barokah Islamic Center, Kediri City. Socialization about knowledge to residents of Islamic Center, this study aims to determine the essential characteristics of Islamic Center residents against TB disease. Questionnaires related to knowledge were filled out before and after explanation using PowerPoint and leaflet media. By using purposive, sampling method obtained 100 respondents. The survey results showed a significant increase in the knowledge of Islamic Center residents about TB disease after socialization in terms of signs and symptoms of the disease (p 0.02), modes of transmission (p 0.02), and methods of prevention of transmission (p 0.01). Negative attitudes are still visible by stigmatizing TB sufferers from being ostracized (62.7%). The majority of subjects will go to health facilities (6.9%), but subjects still choose not to go for treatment (68%). The presentation of material about TB leads to reduce the burden of TB disease in TB endemic communities by modifying attitudes and behavior.
