Abstract

ABSTRACTThis skripsi entitled “Romantisisme dalam Novel Peter Pan karya J. M. Barrie”, is focused on Romanticism which is a comprehension or way of rational thinking of a civilization that put forward feeling, emotion, desire, and will. All of those are associated with beauty. The aim of this research is to identify, analyze, and explain the aspects of Romanticism within the novel. In order to achieve those aims, philosophy of romanticism and the literary criticism are coined by Lovejoy and Wellek-Warren. This research used descriptive method and two approaches namely intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approach is used for analyzing and interpreting the work on romanticism through the plot, character, and setting which are portrayed in Peter Pan. The extrinsic approach is used to analyze the romanticism in Peter Pan and interpret the meaning of its aspects based on the author’s perspective. Moreover, the result of the research shows that the philosophy of romanticism is also included by J. M. Barrie in Peter Pan. The aspects of romanticism found in the novel are Optimist, Paradox, Selfless, Imagination, and Happiness.Keywords: romanticism, philosophy, novel, Peter Pan

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Color Terms in English and Mongondow Language :  A Contrastive Analysis”  is  an attempt to contrast color terms in both of the languages in terms of meaning, and symbol in order to find out the similarities and differences between English and Mongondow language. In terms of methodology, the writer uses descriptive method and contrastive analysis. The data on color terms were obtained by conducting library research related to color terms. The color term  in English language were obtained through several linguistic books and from several articles about color on internet. The data of Mongondow language collected by interviewing some informants. The data of both languages are analyzed based on  theories of Berlin & Kay, Wardhaugh, and Lado. The resuslt of this research shows that English and Mongondow language have similarities and differences. The similiarities are both of languages have basic color terms, they are black, white, red, yellow, green and brown. Both languages have the same meaning and symbol but are limited to certain colors. The differences are English has many color terms (basic color, color combination and color variation), while Mongondow language has only basic color.  Keywords : Color terms, meaning, symbol, contrastive

Abstract

ABSTRACT  The title of this research is “ Salam dan Ungkapan Perpisahan dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Korea : Contrastive analysis”. The aims of this study are to identify, describe the forms and pattern of greetings and leave-takings in English and Korea Language. This research uses a descriptive method, and Wardaugh and Fishman’s theories. The data in English were collected from books sociolinguistic, sourch internet, and the film The Best of Me. While the data in Korea languge were collected from the drama The Heirs. The result of this research shows that greetings and leave takings in English and  Korean language  have two forms those are formal and informal. In addition, the writer finds that there three patterns in English and Korean language on greetings. Those patterns are the mutual formal greetings, the mutual informal greetings and the Non mutual greetings. The patterns of English leave-takings are the same as their greetings. On the other hand, Korean language has only two patterns of non mutual leave-takings formal and informal. Greetings and leave-takings in English and South Korean language have differences. For instance, greetings and leave-takings in English are various. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “An Error Analysis of Prepositions in Descriptive Texts Made by Students of Madrasah Aliyah Nurul Huda Dowora in Tidore” is an attempt to classify, analyze and descripe the errors in the use of prepositions in descriptive texts. It was carried out at Madrasah Aliyah Nurul Huda Dowora in Tidore. The method used in this research is descriptive. Aarts and Aarts’ (1982) concept is used to explain the types of prepositions. To find out the kinds of error in  prepositions made by the students. Jha (1991) theory is used to explain the types errors in prepositiosn made by the students.. The data of the research were taken from the students’ writing assignment.          The results of this research show that there are three kinds of preposition errors made by the students. First, the omission of preposition-the students drop a preposition in a sentence where it is obligatory. Second, the insertion of preposition-the students add a preposition in a sentence where it is not necessary. Third, the selection of incorrect preposition ed in a sentence.     Keyword : Error analysis, prepositions, omission, insertion, selection.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This research is entitled “Taboo Words in English and Sangerese: A Contrastive Analysis”. The objectives of this research are to identify and classify the types of taboo words and to analyze the differences of taboo words in English and Sangerese.  This research uses a descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research, those are preparation, read the theory of sociolinguistics related to taboo words, get information through browsed internet about the taboo, and looked for previous thesis related to taboo. The second step is data collection, the data of taboo words in the English were taken from library research and previous researches; while in Sangerese were taken from native speakers in three vilages: Kauhis, Karatung I and Karatung II, subdistrict Manganitu, in Sangihe Island. The third step is to analyze the data that using the theory of Wardhaugh (1986:230) and were contrasted to find the differences using Lado theory.   The results of this research shows that there are 53 taboo words found in Sangerese and they were classified into ten types those are: sex, bodily function, animal, death, excretion, curse, eating, fisherman, devil, and address terms. It also shows that the causes of using taboo words are to express the emotion, such as anger, happy, and surprises, to talk about sex, to joke, and to insult.  Keywords: Taboo Words; English and Sangerese

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is entitled “Idioms in English and Tondanese: A Contrastive Analysis”. Idiom is a special feature that the meaning of idiom is very different from the literal meaning. This research is tu fulfill the requirement of accomplishing bachelor’s degree in English Department Faculty of Humanities, Sam Ratulangi University. The aim of this research is to identify, analyze, and describe the types of the forms and  meaning of idioms in English and Tondanese, and investigate the similarities and differences of both languages. The writer used theory of Boatner and Gates (1975) and were contrasted to find the differences using Brown (1980: 149-150). The results of this study shows that there are 5 types of idiom in Tondanese, they are: lexemic idioms, phraseological idioms, proverbs, compound idiom and reduplication. Abstract

ABSTRACT This skripsi which is entitled “DiskriminasiRasdalamNovelaHeart of DarknessKarya Joseph Conrad” is a study about the social life of the African people to face the racial discrimination through the story and characters in the novella. There are two questions to be answered in this research namely: How the Racial Discrimination reflected in the novella Heart of Darkness and what is the effect of racial discrimination to all the society in Africa. The aims of this research are to analyze the reflection of racial discrimination by the white people in the novel and to analyze the social effect of racial discrimination to the black people in Africa. The writer uses theory from Aristotle, Wellek and Warren, and De Bonald to describe how the racial discrimination in Africa and what the effect to the people who face discrimination. The intrinsic and extrinsic approaches are applied and the descriptive method is used in this research. Abstract

ABSTRACT   This research is entitled “Afiks-Afiks Derivasi Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Batak Toba (Suatu Analisis Kontrastif)”, written as a research report to describe and analyze the derivational affixes of both English and Toba Batak language in term of form, function and meaning in verb, noun, adjective, and adverb. The objective of this research is to find out the similarities and the differences of derivational affixes in English and Toba Batak language by using O’Grady’s (1987) theory and contrasting them using Lado’s (1971) method.  The English data were collected from several English textbooks, namely  Contemporary Linguistic Analysis : An Introduction (1987) by O’Grady and the data of Toba Batak Language were taken from four native speakers as informants who were born and lived in the land of Toba Batak and they were selected based on age, gender, and intelligence.  The results of this research show that the types of English derivational affixes are prefixes and suffixes. The types of Toba Batak derivational affixes are prefixes, suffixes, infixes, and confixes. The functions of both English and Toba Batak derivational affixes are to create new lexeme that may change the parts of speech or not.  The similarities of English and Toba Batak derivational affixes are both English and Toba Batak derivational affixes have prefixes and suffixes process. The differences of both derivational affixes are English derivational affixes form new English words through prefixation and suffixation; meanwhile, there are infixation and confixation in Toba Batak language. In context of meaning, English derivational affixes have prefixes that have negative meaning, but Toba Batak derivational affixes have no prefixes that denote negative meaning.  Key Word : Derivational Affixes of English, Toba Batak language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

This study is an attempt to identify and analyze the symbols of wedding as one of the sign systems from semantic point of view. This is intended to contrast the wedding froms of both languages in this ­­­case English and Galela. The aspect of this resaearch is related to the sign systems as proposed by Pierce. They are icon, index and symbol. The term of symbol means something which is conventional and accepted by a crtain society, related to what symbolizes. The English data have been collected from several books and websites, whereas the Galela have been taken directly from wedding event and by interviewing the informants to explain what is unknown by writer. The information given by the informants from Tutumaloleo  village. The result of research shows that the wedding  symbols of both languages have similarities the aim of wedding fuction. The differences of both are as follows : wedding event in English culture is performance in modern style, while in Galela culture it is deeply based in traditional background. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims at analyzing symbols in the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The writer chooses this topic because symbol is something that means more than it is; therefore symbol is very interesting to be analyzed. The writer uses descriptive method, which describes symbol from literary point of view. The approach used is intrinsic approach. Accordingly, it involves some efforts such as collecting data and analyzing it by using the theory from Landy (1972) and Kennedy (1991). This study shows that there are 67 symbols in total in this novel that fulfilled all the 6 kinds of symbols; 23 word symbols, 23 action symbols, 8 object symbols, 6 character symbols, 4 phrase symbols and 3 scene symbols. There are also major symbols, which are The Letter A and Pearl. These symbols have connection between the major characters, who are Hester Prynne, Pearl and Arthur Dimmesdale. The writer hopes that this study can help students in understanding symbols.  Key words : types of symbols, major symbols, novel The Scarlet Letter
