Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “The Analysis on Students’ Error in Using Simple Present Tense at SMP N 5 Manado”. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, and analyze descriptively type of errors and the errors frequently made by students in using simple present tense at SMP N 5 Manado. This research is expected to help in developing language learning process and to give information about the errors especially in using simple present tense. In this research, the writer used case study method and the theory from Ellis (2003). She categorizes three types of errors in the language learning namely omission, misinformation, and misordering. There were 61 participants involved from two classes of SMP N 5 Manado in VII 6 and VII 7. The writer used a writing test consists of simple present tense material in order to get the data from the student.The result of this research shows that there are several errors that students made in using simple present tense. There are 151 errors and it was classified into omission, misinformation and misordering. The errors of omission include omission of – s/es in ending verb, omission of to be, omission not in negative sentences, omission of to do in negative and question sentences, omission of question mark on question sentences, and omission of object. The errors of misinformation include misinformation of simple present tense verb, misinformation of subject, misinformation of object, misinformation of to be, and misinformation of to do. The errors of misordering include misordering of to do, misordering of to be and 2 combination of errors. The error that frequently made by students is misinformation which was done for 683 times.     Keywords: Error Analysis, Simple Present Tense, Omission

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis skripsi entitled “Romantisisme dalam Novel Peter Pan karya J. M. Barrie”, is focused on Romanticism which is a comprehension or way of rational thinking of a civilization that put forward feeling, emotion, desire, and will. All of those are associated with beauty. The aim of this research is to identify, analyze, and explain the aspects of Romanticism within the novel. In order to achieve those aims, philosophy of romanticism and the literary criticism are coined by Lovejoy and Wellek-Warren. This research used descriptive method and two approaches namely intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approach is used for analyzing and interpreting the work on romanticism through the plot, character, and setting which are portrayed in Peter Pan. The extrinsic approach is used to analyze the romanticism in Peter Pan and interpret the meaning of its aspects based on the author’s perspective. Moreover, the result of the research shows that the philosophy of romanticism is also included by J. M. Barrie in Peter Pan. The aspects of romanticism found in the novel are Optimist, Paradox, Selfless, Imagination, and Happiness.Keywords: romanticism, philosophy, novel, Peter Pan

Abstract

ABSTRACT             This research is entitled “Simbol-simbol tangan di komunitas Pelayanan Mahasiswa Pantekosta (Suatu analisis semiotika)”. is focused on symbols that can be found in almost all aspects of human life. In this category, symbols are used on Pentecostal community. The aims of this research are to identify and classify kinds of symbol and to analyze and describe meaning of symbol that can be found in Pentecostal student community. The writer uses Pierce theory (1955) about sign and symbols in the process of identifying and classifying kinds of symbols and the process of analyzing and describing the meaning of symbols used in Pentecostal student services community. The data were collected in Sam Ratulangi University. The writer uses descriptive method to analyze the forms of symbols found in Pentecostal student services community activities in this research. The results of this research show that there are 13 symbols used in Pentecostal student services community. The writer clasissifies them into 2 parts; the first is general symbols, which consist of 2 symbols namely, Cross hand symbol, and greetings symbol. The second part is Komisariat symbols, which consist of 11 symbols, we are one symbol, two piece symbol, three symbol, bad odor symbol, Hand Money symbol, OK symbol, sevent symbol, hand strong symbol, Sarangaheo symbol, X symbol, K symbol. The meaning of the general symbols are to identity and as a union of all Pentecostal student services members. IMPLEMENTASI PERMAINAN-PERMAINAN EDUKATIF BAGI ANAK-ANAK BERKEBUTUHAN KHUSUS: STUDI KASUS DI SMP-LB FINJIL KOTA BITUNGChristi I. Timban[1]Golda J. Tulung[2]Maya P. Warouw[3] ABSTRACT The research is entitled “Implementasi Permainan-permainan Edukatif Terhadap Anak-anak Berkebutuhan Khusus: Studi Kasus di SMP-LB Finjil Kota Bitung”. The educational games that are used in this research are Bingo alphabet, Charades, and Weather Exchange board game.This research is aimed at: (1) describing the implementation of the educational games and how they influence the students according to Bloom’s taxonomy, (2) finding and analyzing the effects that emerge during the implementation of the games based on students’ reactions and teacher’s opinion. The writer uses Case Study method to describe deeply about the implementation of these three games in SMP-LB Finjil kota Bitung. Furthermore, the writer tries to discover the phenomenon in implementing the educational games that include bingo alphabet, charades, and exchange weather board game in SMP-LB Finjil kota Bitung.The findings of this research are: (1) the students can enhance their English skills integratedly through the educational games; (2) these three educational games have some values that are suitable in Bloom’s taxonomy that make these games more decent to be brought as the media of English lesson in the class for students with special needs; (3) there are some themes that emerge through the implementation of the games. First, the learning style that fit the students: kinesthetic and audio style. Second, the motivation and student’s background that affect the progress of each students. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “adaptasi dan integrasi budaya lokal pada bahan ajar bahasa Inggris oleh guru sekolah menengah di Tanimbar” were focused to observe the use of English material adaptation by teachers in three secondary schools in Tanimbar, Maluku. The writer in this research used the theories from Richards (2007) and Cheng (2002) to be his main theories, where the typical of material adaptation that tried to be reached by teachers also came from those two theories, while the writer also read and learned some related research which have been done by Syahri and Susanti (2016) in Palembang and Warouw (2015) in Manado. In this research, the writer used some of data collection techniques that reliable to this research, namely; observations and interviews techniques. The finding shows that the mostly used technique is addition and it is practiced in the classroom spontaneously in order to meet the students’ needs. Then, the mostly used local cultural content in teachers’ practices is local folklores. Thhis local cultural content is used to develop students’ interests in learning English and play an important role in the teaching and learning processes.. Keywords:  ELT Materials, Materials adaptation, local cultural contents.

Abstract

Mitra sasaran kegiatan pelatihan ini, yaitu tenaga administrasi dan guru Sekolah Pertanian Negeri (SPN) Provinsi Sulawesi Utara yang berlokasi di desa Kalasey I, kabupaten Minahasa. Sekolah ini merupakan salah satu sekolah kejuruan yang membutuhkan tenaga administrasi serta guru yang terampil salah satunya dalam menulis surat-surat resmi akademik. Seiring dengan perkembangan jaman dan teknologi, kebutuhan untuk berkorespondensi menggunakan Bahasa Inggris meningkat. Menjawab kebutuhan ini, maka tenaga administrasi dan guru diharapkan mempunyai keterampilan untuk menulis surat resmi menggunakan Bahasa Inggris. Tujuan kegiatan IbM pelatihan ini, yaitu meningkatkan keterampilan kelompok guru dan tenaga administrasi sehingga mereka mampu mengutarakan maksud dan tujuan dalam suatu konteks komunikasi secara tulisan/ surat. Tujuan khusus program, ini, yaitu menghasilkan keterampilan menulis surat dalam Bahasa Inggris sesuai dengan format, bentuk dan budaya menulis yang berlaku. Adapun metode pelaksanaan yang akan diterapkan pada program ini, yaitu pelatihan dengan memperkenalkan berbagai jenis teks surat, baik yang formal maupun informal; pendampingan; dan evaluasi. Prosedur kerja untuk mendukung ketiga aspek permasalahan, berturut-turut, yaitu observasi, pelatihan, evaluasi, luaran, dan pelaporan.Kata Kunci: Penulisan Surat Resmi, Surat formal berbahasa Inggris, Guru dan TenagaAdministrasi, SPN Kalasey

Abstract

ABSTRACT      This research, entitled  “Error Analysis of Simple Present Tense and Present Continuous Tense: A Case Study at Seminary of St. Francis Xavier Tomohon”.  This research is an attempt to identify, classify, and analyze the kind of errors made by the first year students of Seminary St. Francis Xavier Tomohon when using the simple present tense and present continuous tense in writing English. This research used a case study approach. The data were taken from the first year students in seminary by making a test about simple present tense and present continuous tense and giving a topic for the students to make an essay. The writer uses some techniques of analyzing the data, as follows: identification of error, classification, description, and correction. The result of this research shows that there are four types of errors made by the students.  Those errors are omission, misinformation, misordering, and addition. Based on this errors, the writer also finds some forms of errors. The writer finds the error of verb omission (-es, -s), auxiliary omission of the negative sentence, omission of to be, omission of –ing form, misinformation of simple present tense’s  verb, misinformation of to be, misinformation of present continuos tense’s verb, misordering of the subject, misordering of the object, misordering of adverb, misordering of conjunction, addition of simple present tense’s verb, addition of preposition, addition of –ing, addition of to be, and addition of verb’s base form.  Key words: Error Analysis, Simple Present Tense, Present Continuos Tense, Students’ Essays

Bandjar1Maya P.Warouw2Andriyani Marentek3 ABSTRACTThis research is entitled ?Dampak Penggunaan Twitter Terhadap Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris (Ditinjau dari Persepsi Mahasiswa)?.The objectives of this research are to identify and analyze the effects and learning strategy by using Twitter on learning English based on Cohen (2011) and Chamot (2011) theories. The learning strategies focused on the function are metacognition, cognition, affection, social and then the ones focused on the application are listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills.The writer used qualitative methods in order to analyze and collect students? perceptions about the effects and learning strategies of using Twitter on learning English. The location of the data collection itself was at the English Departement of The Faculty of Humanities, Sam Ratulangi University. The writer selected 10 students who used Twitter as the data of this research. The tools of this research was using open-ended interview by Cresswell (2012) theory.The result of this research showed that there were some negative and positive effects of using Twitter on learning English based on students perception. Besides, there were also learning strategies that students used for improving their ability on learning English skills, which were metacognition, cognition, affection and social. This research used by Cohen (2011) and Chamot?s (2011) theories about the learning strategies of using Twitter on learning English.                                                                                                                                              Keyword: English learning, Students? perception, Twitter use and effect

Abstract

ABSTRACTWhite Teeth is a 2000 novel by the British author Zadie Smith. It focuses on the later lives of two wartime friends the Bangladeshi Samad Iqbal and the Englishman Archie Jones and their families in London.This research Entitled”Nilai-nilai pertemanan yang dicerminkan dalam Novel White Teeth Karya Zadie Smith” aims to find the values of friendship that exist in the novel through the nature of some of the characters in the novel. this research is expected to be useful for readers in order to understanding the meaning of friendship in life.Through the Friendship Theories by James O.Grunebaum and characterby Robert Stanton, the data were collected by emphasizing on the process and the factors that affected the characters in friendship in the story. In analyzing the data, the writer used the descriptive method with extrinsic and intrinsic approach.The results show that the friendship values of the author are determines the values of friendship and also the value of friendship shown in the characterization of Zadie Smith's White Teeth novel which is illustrated by two main characters, Archie Jones and Samad Iqbal, including the Value of Understanding, Trust, Loyalty and Cooperation as stated above has an influence on their lives and their survival after World War II.Keyword: Friendship Values, Characters, Zadie Smith, White Teeth

Abstract

                                              ABSTRACT     The research is entitled “Students’ Perceptions on ELT Materials: A Case Study of Students with Tombulunese Background in the Faculty of Humanities, Sam Ratulangi University”. The objectives of this research are to identify and to analyze about students’ perceptions towards ELT Materials which, in this research, is Written 4 textbook. It is also to analyze and describe the factors that influenced their perceptions of the textbook materials. This research employs case study as an approach and uses a descriptive method. The writer collected the data by interviewing English Department students with Tombulunese background with a total of 6 participants from batch 2015 and 2016. As the result of this research, the writer has found sixteen perceptions based on Tomlinson’s theory of good textbook criterion, where two of them did not fulfill the criteria, and one perception of socio-cultural aspects in the textbook materials. In this research, the writer also found the factors that influenced their perceptions which consists of internal factors and external factors, they are; 1) interest, 2) needs, 3) background, 4) experience 5) culture 6) classroom environment.Keywords: Students’ perception, English learning, ELT materials
