Abstract

Abstract In English, there are two subclasses of verbs such as lexical verb and auxiliary verb. Modals are a class of auxiliary verbs that combine with the base  form to make verb phrase with a wide meaning. This study is an attempt to describe and analyze the modals in the novel ?Jungle Nurse? by Roberts. The aim of this research is to identify and classify the forms and meaning of modals and its mostly used in the novel.The method used in this research is descriptive method. The data of modals have been taken from the sentences in the novel ?Jungle Nurse? and analyzed by using Robert?s concept. The result of this study shows that modals are existed in the novel. They are pure modals, special modals, and semi modals. Pure modals used in the novel are can, could, will, would, shall, should, may, might and must. Special modals which used are be going to, have to, had better, had rather, be to, be able to, and ought to. Semi modals which used  are dare and need. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled ”Error Analysis in the Use of Simple Future Tense by Grade XI Sudents at SMA Negeri 9 Manado” is an attempt to identify and analyze the kinds of errors in the use of future tense by the students in Senior High School. This research is expected to give a contribution for teachers and students, in terms of developing a better English learning process in the use of future tense, particulary error analysis in the use of shall/will, be going to, be about to/be to, and present continuous as the future tenses mark. The method used in this research is descriptive method which has been done in several stages : preparation was made by reading the theory about simple future tense and the previous studies related to this research. Data was taken from 71 students in Binsus Science Class of SMA N 9 Manado,  by teaching and giving them test containing simple future tense material. Lennon’s theory is used to explain how to analyze the use of future tense by grade XI student of SMA N 9 Manado. The result of this research shows that there are four kinds of errors in the use of simple future tense, these are addition, omission, substitution, and ordering errors. Errors of addition made by students are adittion be, infinitive to, about, will, s and –ed, -ing, have, be + -ing, and does + -ing. Errors of omission are pronoun, be, infinitive to,-ing, verb, going to, not, be + about to, about, about to + verb, be + not, going, and have. Errors of substitution are will, be, have, be + going to, be + to,be + -ing, -ing, open, and the. Errors of ordering are subjek and verb.   Key word: simple future tense and error analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled ”Learning  Activities in Communicative Language Teaching in LPIA (Lembaga Pendidikan Indonesia Amerika)  Ternate” is an attempt to identify and analyze the activities used in  communicative language teaching especially in LPIA Ternate. The concept of Moss (2005) on CLT activities is used to identify the learning activities used in LPIA. These activities are conversation grids, questionnaires, games, information gap, problem solving activities, discussion, and role-play. The data of this research were taken by interviewing the teachers in LPIA and by observing five classes with 25 students’ in each class, about one hour. The data show that the activities of communicative language teaching that were used in LPIA Ternate, are games, pair work or group work and discussion. There are two other additional activities used in class. They are  debate class and e-trip. The results of this research show that the learning activities used in  LPIA Ternate support Moss’ concept. These CLT activities are games, pair work or group work and discussion. Additionally, there are two other CLT activities that were found or used in LPIA. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is an attempt to describe and analyze the English and Tanimbar language which focuces on the interrogative sentences in relation to their form and function in both languange based on Aarts and Aarts theory’s and to compare using by Lado’s theory.The English and Tanimbar Language are two languages from different language families. English it is included in Indo-European and Tanimbar Language it is included in Austronesian one. Each of them has its own characteristics.The English data have been collected from books, whereas the data of Tanimbar language have been collected by interviewing some informants using contrastive analysis approach the data are then analyzed and described.The result shows that forms of  interrogative sentences in English are yes-no question, tag question and interrogative-word question while in Tanimbar language has two forms such as in yes-no question and interrogative word question. English and Tanimbar language have similarities, in the form of yes-no question and interrogative word question. The difference in English question word is at the beginning of sentence and Tanimbar language at the beginning and the end of sentence.   Keywords : Interrogative Sentences, English and Tanimbar Language, Contrastive          Analysis.       Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is motivated by finding of problems that is to classify the taboo words in the movie“Bad Teacher”. Therefore, the writer identifies taboo words that are used in the movie with the aims to classify and describe the types of taboo words by using the theory of Wardhaugh (1986). The result shows that there are seven types of taboo words, those are taboo words related to mother in law, animal, sex, death, excretion, bodily function, and religion. Based on the theory of Trudgill (1974), there were eight types of taboo words in which they related to the magic, death, left-hand, family relationship, animal, sex, excretion, and Christian religion. This research uses descriptive method and conducted in three steps : first preparation, in this case the writer watches the movie to get a good understanding. Second, data collection, the writer accesses the internet to get the movie script, then the writer reads the script and find out the conversations that contain taboo words. Third, analyzes data descriptively based on the theory of Wardhaugh. After doing identification, classification, and analysis, the conclusion is that taboo words which are used in the movie are expressing the feelings anddescribing regards intimacy within a group.   Keywords : Taboo Words, Movie:Bad Teacher, theory:Wardhaugh, Trudgill.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Morphophonemic Process in English and Gorontalo Language: a Contrastive Analysis” aims at identifying, analyzing and describing the morphophonemic processes and finding out the similarities and the differences of morphophonemic processes in English and Gorontalo language by using of Crystal’s (2008) and Nida’s (1949) theory. The English data were collected from several English textbooks. Some of them areA Course in Modern Linguistics(1968) by Hockett,Zeitchrift für Anglistik und Amerikanistik (1969) by Lehnert,Introducing English Linguistics (2009) by Meyer, etc. and the data of Gorontalo language were collected frombooks such asMorfologi dan Sintaksis Bahasa Gorontalo (1988) by Alitu et all.,Kamus Bahasa Gorontalo – Indonesia (2001) by Pateda, and Tata Bahasa sederhana Bahasa Gorontalo (2006) by Pateda and Pulubuhu and fivenative speakers at the age of 35-75 years old in Gorontalo. The results of this research shows that in morphophonemic process of English and Gorontalo language have some similarities anddifferences. The similarities are that both languages have kinds of morphophonemic processes. English has seven kinds of morphophonemic processes, they are assimilation, dissimilation, reduction of clusters, loss of consonant phonemes, loss of vowel phonemes, palatalization, and nasalization whereas in Gorontalo language six kinds of them found.The difference is no palatalization found in Gorontalo Language. Other similarities anddifferences are in dissimilation. English has six kinds of dissimilations, they are progressive, regressive, contiguous phonemes, noncontiguous phonemes, point of articulation, and manner of articulation whereas Gorontalo language has only five kinds of dissimilations and doesn’t have contiguous phonemes.   Keywords: Morphophonemic Process, English and Gorontalo Language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Language is the most important part of human life. In communication, people do not only utter sentence but also transfer it into behavior. Rejection is a form of communication. Rejection refusing something of the hearer and rejection belongs to perlocutionary act. Rejection can be divided into direct rejection and indirect rejection. The research question of this research is focused on the rejection which is implemented by the author through his novel The Stars Shine Down. In collecting data, the writer paid attention to the utterances among the characters in the novel. The collected data were analyzed descriptively in terms of how rejection as perlocutionary act are found in the conversation among characters. The result shows that there are some aspects of perlocutionary in direct and indirect rejection, those are to bring hearer to know, to get hearer to think, to get hearer to do, irritate and distract attention.   Key Words : Rejection, Perlocutionary act, Pragmatics.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This research entitled “Penggunaan Bahasa dalam Mengekspresikan Emosi Kegembiraan dalam Film Twilight Saga Oleh Stephenie Meyer”. Emotion associated with the feeling experienced by someone. Emotion emerged in a person who often disclosed with various expressions such as sad, happiness, angry, and love. Emotion that is given to certain feelings affect how to act. This is caused by the emotion which is the dominant factor affecting a person’s act. Emotions are essentially a form of communication one. When someone in emotional, it means he is trying to convey the message to others. Based on this background, the writer is able to formulate the problem are what kind of gestures and languages people used in expressing happiness in the film Twilight Saga. The objectives of this research are to identify, analyze, and describe the gestures and languages used when people express happiness in the film Twilight Saga. This research was taken in the film Twilight Saga which consists in five part, they are Twilight,New moon,Eclipse, BreakingDawn Part 1, and Breaking Dawn Part 2. The researcher uses qualitative approach in order to find out the gestures and languages when people used in express their happiness. There are three steps that the writer do, they are preparation, collecting data, and analyzing data. The results of this research show that there are some expressions that could be found in expressing the feeling of happiness followed by the posture and gesture support Digagunarsa et al., theory about emosional expression.   Keyword: Language, Happiness, Posture, Gesture, Twilight Saga

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is an attempt to identify and analyze the politeness aspects which are found in the film Eat Pray Love. In this research, the writer focuses on the polite utterance as one aspect of behavior which is found in the film Eat Pray Love. .           This research was done through the descriptive method. In collecting the data, the writer paid close attention to the available relevant data through conversation among the characters in the film. Then the writer categorized them into their suitable maxims using the concept of Leech. The finding shows that the uses of politeness maxims in the film are tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. It is expected that this study can help the students and readers in learning politeness aspects of using language. Keywords: politeness aspects, maxims, Film “Eat Pray Love”.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is entitled Silent Way Method Use in Teaching English in PIA English Course Manado. The research question is how the Silent Way Method was used in teaching English in PIA English Course Manado. The aim of the research is to identify and describe the Silent Way Method which was used in teaching English in PIA English Course Manado. In collecting the data, the writer observed a class in PIA for one month. The population is all classes divided into Beginner Class; Power Speaking 1,2,3; Prepatory Practical 1,2; Step Communication 1,2,3,4,5,6; Basic Communication 1,2,3,4,5,6 and Step 1 class was chosen as sample. The data consist of 10 students from different junior high schools in Manado. The data analysis was based on Gateggno’s theory on Silent Way Method. The collected data were identified and analyzed focusing on the aspects of Silent Way Method used in class in PIA English Course including the media. As the result, the teacher in PIA used a syllabus to help in their teaching preparation and in teaching systematically. The teacher’s roles as a lecture, educator and driver of creativity were found in class. Similarly,learners could express their opinion by using their own language, they can also explore words and sentences in English in their own way. As well the learnerin Silent Way Method can be more confident in expressing their questions and statements. The media gave support for the learner in learning English by using Sound – Color – Chart, Teacher’s Silence, Peer Correction, Word Chart and Rod.
