Abstract

Lasut, M.Hum²                                        Dr. Garryn Ch. Ranuntu, M.Hum³     This research entitled “Politeness Principles in English and Gorontalo Language: A Contrastive Analysis” focuses on maxim related to politeness principles. The aims of this research are to identify, classify and analyze the polite utterances in English and Gorontalo Language according to politeness principles. In this research, the writer uses descriptive method. The English data were collected from pragmatic books, website, and some skripsi. In this research the writer uses Leech’s theory to analyze the data and Lado theory in contrasting both languages to find out the differences and similarities. The polite principle in both languages that can be seen, such as requesting, commanding, and ordering, it is also shown by the acting of convincing what the speaker says. The result shows that there are six maxim of politeness principles and their function. Those are tact maxim, the genorisity maxim, the approbation maxim, the modesty maxim, the aggrement maxim, and the sympathy maxim. It is expected that this research will help students and readers in learning pragmatic, especially on politeness principles.Keywords: Pragmatic, Politeness, English, Gorontalo Language

Abstract

Lasut, M.Hum2                                      Dra. Rosalina R. Rambing, DEA3     This research is entitled "Rejection Aspect in the Novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens." This research focuses on identifying and classifying the types of rejection and analyzing and describing the aspect of rejection found in every utterance of each character in the novel Great Expectations. Rejection acts is a perlocutionary act. This study uses the theory of Leech (1983) and Crystal (1978), in e collecting the data, the writer focuses on the utterances conveyed by each character in the novel. each datum was analyzed descriptively and the results showed that there were several aspects of direct rejection as many 26 data, and indirect rejection 19 data, namely: to get hearer to think, to get hearer to do something, to bring hearer to know, irritate, frighten, encourage, and amuse.________________________________________Key Words : Rejection, Novel : Great Expectations . Abstract

                                                        ABSTRACT     This research entitled “Potensi Anak Berbakat dalam Novel Frindle Karya Andrew Clements” is intended to fulfill a requirement to accomplish the Sarjana degree at Faculty of Humanities, Sam Ratulangi University, Manado. It aims at determining qualities of gifted child of Nick Allen as the main character in novel Frindle. Nick has many bright ideas; he is a good kid who solves problems around him. His traits that tend to be a gifted child can be found from him sitting in grade 2, this is supported by his environment from classmates to his teacher. This study uses the theory of Leta S. Hollingworth (1926), and uses a descriptive method in analyzing the data in the novel. The results show that the main character, Nick Allen, has tendencies as gifted children, such as leadership, sense of humor, courage initiative, obedience, studiousness, persistence, cheerfulness, intellectual modesty, and evenness of temper. That factors influence this are Nick's own environment, friends and family and even people use a word invention. It had such an unexpected impact that he became famous for his invention.Keywords: Gifted Child, novel Frindle

The aims of this study are to identify, clasify, and analyze the maxims that related to politeness principles and their functions found in the Film Home Alone. The method of this study is descriptive method. The technic of this study are collecting, classifying and anaykzing data. The data were collected through conversation among the characters. This study using Leech’S (1983) theory. The result shows that there are six maxim of politeness principles and their function. Those are tact maxims, genorisity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, aggrement maxim, and sympathy maxim. Abstract

                                                      ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Praanggapan Dalam Film Little Women Karya Greta Gerwig”. This research attempts to investigate the pragmatics presupposition in the film Little Women by Greta Gerwig. In this research, the researcher attempts to identify, classify and analyze the types and meanings of presupposition in the film Little Women by Greta Gerwig. The data were collected from the film Little Women by Greta Gerwig. In identifying, classifying and analyzing the data, the researcher uses the theory of Yule (1996). The result shows that there are five types of presupposition and their function applied by the characters in their dialogues. First, existential presupposition consist of 393 utterances that presuppose the existence of an entity. Second, factive presupposition consist of 60 utterances that presuppose information that is presumed to be something real or a fact. Third, lexical presupposition consist of 23 utterances that presuppose other meanings or implied meanings that are understood. Fourth, structural presupposition consist of 132 utterances that presuppose information regarding something in speech in the form of interrogative sentences or 5W1H structures, this can be seen in interrogative sentences which are conventionally interpreted with question words. Fifth, counterfactual presupposition consist of 11 utterances that presuppose not only something is not true but also contradicts the existing reality. Sixth, non-factive presupposition presuppose that something is assumed to be unreal consisting of 0 utterances or no data of this type of presupposition found in the film Little Women by Greta Gerwig. The most frequent presupposition in this film is Existential Presupposition which consists of 393 utterances. This research is expected to give contributions to the development of linguistic studies, particularly in Pragmatic analysis. It is also expected to help the readers to have knowledge of the pragmatic presupposition.Keywords: Presupposition, Pragmatics, Film Little Women

Abstract

                                                     ABSTRACT     This research is entitled “Terms of Food and Beverage in English and Tobelo language (A Contrastive Analysis)”. The objectives of this research are to identify and classify the types of food and beverages in English and Tobelo language and o analyse the differences and similarities of the terms of food and beverages between English and Tobelo language. This research uses a descriptive method. The data of food and beverages in English were collected from skripsi, journal, or article from the internet, while the data in Tobelo language were collected by interviewing informants by phone calls, furthermore in taking the data pictures of food and beverages in Tobelo language, the writer conducted picture searching of food and beverages by the internet and also took some pictures from the traditional markets and then confirmed the data of the images taken were appropriate and correct with the intended data to the informants. The collected data have been analyzed by using the theories from Frisch in Hickerson’s and Foley’s and then to get a contrastive analysis the writer uses the theory of Lado’s also to find out the difference and similarities of the two different languages. The result shows that the data of English food consist two types those are solid food and beverages/drink. Tobelo language consist of three groups those are solid food, liquid food, and beverages/drink. English food and beverages has 8 ways of making food and beverages, Tobelo language has 9 ways. English food and beverages has 8 types of basic food and beverages ingredient, while in Tobelo language has 10 types of basic food and beverages ingredient. The differences found are in English categories has no liquid food while in Tobelo language has. In English language have many kinds of bread while in Tobelo language have many kinds of cakes/cookies. In the way of food and beverages are made, Tobelo language has nonofu/fufu(smoke/fumigation) but in English has not. In the basic ingredient of staple food in English has wheat and bread while in Tobelo language has rice and sagu(sago)._______________________Keywords: Terms, Food and Beverages, English Language, Tobelo Language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

                                                   ABSTRACT     This research is entitled “The Terms of Food in English and Patani Language: A Contrastive Analysis”. This reseacrh is an attempt to identify, classify, analyze and describe the terms of food which are used in English and panati language. The English data have been collected from thesis and from the internet, whereas the Patani language data have been elicted from some informants. The qualitative descriptive method is used to describe and analyze the kinds of food by using Frisch in Hickerson theory. After describing the kind of food in English and Patani language, the writer makes a contrastive analyze by using Robert Lado theory in finding out the similarities and diffrences of both Language. In this research the writer uses Givon (1994) and Leech’s theory (1971) to analyzing the data, and Lado (1957) theory to contrasting both languages to find out the differences and similarities. The result shows that the kind of terms of food in English and Patani language consists of two groups, they are solid food and oil food. Solid food consists of fruits, vegetable, bread, meat, fish and seafood, and proccesed food. The form of food in Panati are liquid and solid food. English food term consist of word and phrase and the meaning only denotative. Patani society has so many celebrations that used the certain name. Word, phrase, and clause as lingual forms of Panati food. The meaning are denotative and connotative meaning.Keywords: The Terms of Food in English and Patani Language, Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

                                                     ABSTRACT     This research is entitled “Deiksis dalam Film Enola Holmes Karya Harry Bradbeer”. There are 5 types of deixis, those are: person deixis (first person, second person, and third person), place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and sosial deixis. Deixis belongs to pragmatics. The word deixis come from the Greek deiktikos, it means, “pointing”. The objectives of this research are to identify and classify the types of deixis and to analyze the function of deixis in the film Enola Holmes by Harry Bradbeer. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The data are identified, classified and analyzed descriptively. The data were analyzed based on Levinson theory. The result shows that there are five types of deixis in the film Enola Holmes, those are person (first person: I, me, mine, our, we, us, and my; second person: your, yours and you; third person: he, him, they, and them), place deixis: here, there, this train, this house time deixis: ago, tomorrow, next time, later,and now, discourse deixis: this, and sosial deixis: madam, master, sir, uncle, brother, and mother. Thios rsearch also shows the functions of each deixis. It is expected that this research will help the students and the other readers to learn the pragmatics aspects, especially about deixis.Keywords: Film, Pragmatics, Deixis.
