Abstract

Desa Ponggok is one of the independent villages in Indonesia. This village can manage its natural potential through Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) to improve welfare and empower its society. This research describes in detail the efforts made by the government and villagers in improving welfare through various businesses managed under BUMDes. This research uses qualitative, descriptive methods. Data collection techniques are carried out through involved observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. This study found that managing the assets and potential of the village through BUMDes Tirta Mandiri which involved the village community had succeeded in improving the welfare of the residents was not simple. Several factors hinder and encourage the success of this effort, including technology, human resources, and business competition. However, a solid collaboration between the government and villagers has proven to be able to overcome obstacles and make BUMDes as facilitators in the socio-economic empowerment of its citizens.

Abstract

Noise is a type of music that is played by using instruments to produce loud. Unlike music in general, which presents harmonization of tones to enjoy its beauty, noise music presents noise to be enjoyed. This study explores and describes noise music in Bandung, as a performing art as well as a symbolic expression of the musicians and their audiences. This study uses a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods, and data collection techniques through observation, interviews and literature studies. This research found that noise music is an alternative which is also a symbolic expression of the musicians. They express their emotions and opinions through the noise created by various tools. The creation of noise and the use of musical instruments in combination with objects that are not musical instruments (for example, loudspeakers, and washbasins) are a symbol of breaking the standard of general musical art which tends to present aesthetics and order.

Abstract

Women play double roles in the society, in the public sphere as worker who earn income for the household, and in the domestic sphere as housewives. This research discusses women’s roles in peasant family. This research applies qualitative method. Data collection technique includes participant observation, in-depth interview, and archival study. Data were analysed using AGIL’s theory of social change (Adaptation, Goal, Integration, Latency) by Talcott Parson; and Harvard-Moser gender analytical frameworks. This study suggests that women in peasant family have multiple roles; as a spouse and housewives in domestic sphere, and as farmer and as member of the community in public sphere. Women take responsibility in educating children in the domestic sphere; while in the public sphere, as farmer, they contribute significantly to their family income.

Abstract

This research discusses the understanding and practice of high blood pressure prevention and treatment in Desa Cilayung using medical anthropology perspective. This research applied qualitative method, in particular, ethnography. The data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interview. The results of this research indicate that people in Desa Cilayung understand high blood pressure as a disease caused by excessive mental pressure, excessive physical activity, and excessive salt consumption. Practices for prevention and treatment include reducing causal factors and taking medicines from biomedical practitioners and ethnomedicine from traditional healers or medicinal plants they obtain from their homegarden. This understanding and practices have been influenced by people’s local belief on disease etiology and its treatment.
