Abstract

Mechanization in the tea harvesting process commonly leads to gender imbalance, as male workers receive more benefit than female.  However, this phenomenon does not the case in Gambung Tea Plantation.  Female participation in the machine harvesting is high as they become the operator of tea plucking machines. This phenomenon is worth to study in particular to explore female workers’ personal experience in mechanical tea plucking. This research applies descriptive qualitative method with phenomenology approach. Female and male machine picker becomes the main subject in this study. Primary data were collected through observation, documentation, interviews and Focused Group Discussion with female and male tea plucker. Triangulation techniques were applied to ensure data validity. This study suggests that the mechanization process in Gambung Tea Plantation has created a new gender division of labour where male and female work together in a team to operate the machine. Female workers show quality of work better than male worker. Amidst the efforts of female workers to  participate in the mechanization there are risks and constraints for them, such as less-gender friendly equipment, lack of access and control to resources, cultural norms, values in the society.

Abstract

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and community development initiatives grow rapidly in recent years. It’s an act of a business ethics by taking part in efforts to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs). It does not have economic value per se, but also social, cultural and political by involving local agent and existing cultural institutions which in turn catalyse the emergence and the redefinition of local social-political movement. This study discusses the emergence of local agent and their significant roles as social entrepreneur in the community development program initiated by Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) in East Kalimantan province. This study employs qualitative method. Primary data were gathered from interviews and participant-observations, while secondary data were gathered from company reports and company internal presentation materials. The main qualitative data are short stories of three social entrepreneurs live in the mining areas who network with CSR and community development program of PT. Kaltim Prima Coal. This study suggests that social entrepreneurs are the key success of community development program, because they have the capability to foster members of their community to be innovative and creative, as well seize their opportunity for empowerment and to increase community members participation in development. The social entrepreneur have a strong bonding with local culture even though they are not native of their locality. In some cases, social entrepreneurs initiate the local socio-political movement and they do not merely play their role as social broker.

Abstract

Chinese descendants in Indonesia, known as Tionghoa, have suffered from discrimination since the New Order regime, ranging from policy to identity status. The discrimination reached its peak in May 1998 as the riots blew up against Chinese descendants. The riots have been a footage of dark history that destroyed the identity of Chinese descendants in Indonesia leads and this leads to transformation in the social life of the Chinese descendants in Indonesia up to present, in particular in their identity. This research discusses the transformation of identity among Chinese descendants in Indonesia drawing on the case of Chinese descendants in Lasem. This research applies qualitative method with a case study approach. This research finds that the Chinese descendants in Lasem attempts to construct their new identity through culture hybridization and mimicry that is mingled with the identity of the local community. Through this process, they successfully create a new identity as Chinese-Javanese or wong Lasem that leads them to experience a survival and harmonious life with the local. Since the reforms, this new identity fosters the strong and harmonious interaction between the Javanese and Chinese in Lasem that slowly blurs the identity of the two ethnics.
