Abstract

This paper shows how physical reconstructions and managerial development of the Jakarta Arts Center -Taman Ismail Marzuki (PKJ-TIM), have changed the role of artists at that arts center. TIM which has been established for 50 years is the largest arts center in Jakarta, and eventually became a hub for national and international artistic exchanges. This study uses a conceptual framework relating the locality to supralocal structures, to see TIM as a public space as well as a social space that form the sense of place among the artists. The research method used is ethnography. Data was collected through participant-observation, in-depth interviews, literature reviews, and documentation. The study found that social relationships between artists and their peers inside and outside of TIM, the TIM management, the public at TIM and with the physical environment of TIM, create a sense of place for artists. There are differences in the role of TIM artists in the past (during the reign of DKI Jakarta Governor Ali Sadikin) and at present, following subsequent shifts of DKI Jakarta administration. The place has undergone several restorations. The role of artists in TIM has been slowly reduced from being active actors and managers of art activities at TIM, to only being art performers. The changes have decreased the artists’ interest of TIM as a center for their artistic enterprise. In the artists’ language, TIM has become a place for art activities that lose the spirit of artistry. In conclusion, changes in the artists’ role at the TIM is related to the wider structure, namely the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta, and their relations with fellow artist and arts institutions at the local, national, and even international level.

Abstract

This paper discusses the relationship between ethnic identity and diversity management by the state, based on the case of the Indo people in the Netherlands. As descendants of mixed-marriage between persons from different ethnic groups who were also unequals in Netherland-Indies colonial society, their citizenship status changes from the colonial period to the decolonization period in the Indies, and eventually in the post-colonial Netherlands. The data is obtained from a qualitative research that consists of literature study and interviews with Indo people and an Indo organization in The Netherlands. Indo identity and culture contain ‘foreignness’ and ‘nativeness’, which could bring advantages or disadvantages, or even threaten their very existence, in different contexts of diversity management by the state. The study found different practices of indoness between three Indo generations in the Netherlands. Intergenerational Indo experiences has constructed a relatively open disposition among the younger generation on their identity and tolerance towards others in the increasingly multicultural Netherlands.

Abstract

The 2006 earthquake in Yogyakarta had already passed. However, the process of adaptation carried out by every individual is different. In this article, I disclose the experiences of women with disabilities in their adaptation to their new lives, especially in building accessible homes, negotiating with donors and positioning themselves and their roles new in the family and community. By employing ethnographic methods, I found that even though women with disabilities experience limited mobility, marginalisation and stigma as passive recipients of assistance, they still try to build agencies while overcoming challenges during the process of housing reconstruction. To realise the accessible housing, they utilise their identity as persons with disabilities to complete their access houses, redefine the concept of an ideal home according to Javanese culture and maintain their position as a pillar of the household to maintain their bargaining power in the household. Through sabar (patience), nrimo (acceptance) and ikhlas (sincerity) women with new disabilities have exercised their agency not only in the process of housing reconstruction but also in the long-term journey of recovery after the disaster.
