Abstract

The creation of a play entitled “Tanah Ode Kampung Kami” have several stages, starting from determining the issue and the ideas, conducting research, implementing the method of collective writing text, and finally becomes a show. The research process is a way of organizing and understanding the main problem of a play, i.e. the land, so it would be able to be implemented as a drama script collectively in theatrical performances. Collective text aims to make actors and directors have the same perception of a predetermined theme. This study uses a qualitative research design with data collection methods in the form of observations and interviews. The conclusion of this study is that the collective text method used in the “Tanah Ode Kampung Kami” script is used to harmonize the ideas that were built together so that it becomes a complete text which is the result of collaborative thinking between the elements involved in the process of making the script.

Abstract

Gunung Leuser national park covers an area of 830,268.95 hectares which has been designated as a national park since 1980. It has been managed by the Indonesian government through Gunung Leuser National Park Center. Ecological zonation systems have been implemented in the management. However, since about 1999, groups of refugees who escaped from the Aceh conflict have resided in the national park. They transformed the dry or bush landscape which is designated for conservation area into settlements, as well as rubber and oil palm plantations. The national park authority considers their activities illegal. While the refugees, after 20 years of their activities in the park, consider themselves to have the rights to cultivate the land.  They have attempted various ways to legalize their settlement and right to cultivate the area inside the park. This qualitative study aims at describing the tenurial conflict faced by refugees residing in the Gunung Leuser national park. Data were collected through interviews and participant observation. The study found the violence and harsh tension in regards to this tenurial conflict. On one hand, the refugees fight for their livelihood in the park. On the other hand, the park management tends to implement their authority to assure the original function of the national park. The government should take necessary action to resolve this long-term conflict using a rights-based approach; so the refugees, who are also the citizens of the state, could have their access to cultivate the land.

Abstract

This research aims at describing local knowledge about landslides among residents living in a landslide prone area; using Anthropological and Geological approach. In January 2021, a landslide occurred and killed 40 victims. This research uses qualitative and quantitative methods. Data were collected based on the Anthropology and Geology approach. Primary data were obtained through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, survey, and mapping using GIS technology. The results of this research indicate that geologically, the research location is prone to landslides. The residents have a lack of knowledge and experience about disasters, in particular landslides. Furthermore, they lack knowledge about the geological facts of the housing area. They trust the government and the developer who built the housing which they believe had considered the security of their housing.

Abstract

This study discusses the historical process of cotton introduction and commercialization in Maumere, Sikka Regency, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, from 1912 to 1943 using political economy perspective. In the early 20th century, the Netherlands enacted the 1870 Agrarian Law. Flores was one of the areas officially colonized by the Dutch. A number of crop commodities were introduced, including the establishment of plantations, to participate in global trade traffic. Cotton is one of the plants introduced to Flores for the benefit of the world’s textile industry. The people of Flores were forced to plant, but along the way, the plants did not succeed in providing surplus value to trading companies, let alone to local people. This study was conducted based on literature. This study finds that the power relations between the Dutch East Indies government, trading companies, and local rulers, led to the forced commercialization. This interwoven political economy relationship had an impact on the existence of a primitive and capital accumulation mechanism. The mechanism causes local residents to lose land and shelter and some of them fall into forced labor to serve the feudal elite and colonial rulers.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic, which has occurred in Indonesia since March 2020, has created a crisis in society. The state began to take appropriate policies in handling the Covid-19 pandemic. The alignment of state’s policies in the economic or health sectors has been questioned. This research aims to examine the state’s practices in  delivering aid to members of society and the incoherent images about the state which results from the practice. The relationship between the state and the society was analyzed through Migdal’s framework. This autoethnographic research was conducted in Karangwuni Village, Polokarto District, Sukoharjo Regency. Data were collected through participatory observations, archival study, and in-depth interviews with various members of social groups, such as village chief, midwives, and residents who are directly affected by Covid-19. The result of this research indicated that the village has become an arena for domination contests by the state and the society. The state’s practice of delivering aid to members of society through the village government has led village authorities, health workers, and the aid beneficiaries to construct various images about the state. Apparently, the state is not the dominant actor. The image of the state that was originally coherent has been challenged as both the state and the society tend to pull out each other.

Abstract

As part of popular culture, film is able to both reflect and shape the understanding and attitudes towards gender in a society. However, despite the increase of gender awareness in Indonesian society, there are still many filmmakers unfamiliar with gender issues. In fact, the unequal treatment and underrepresentation of female characters in film is a real issue within the Indonesian film industry. It is seen in the lack of films that positively representing women. Often, women are portrayed as being inferior to men. In addition, many films still sexually objectify women. This study attempts to analyze the depiction of women between highest-grossing films made by female directors and those directed by males. This paper aims to highlight how female participation within film production influences women’s representation in popular films. The data is analysed using the Bechdel test — a tool to measure representation of women in fictional stories. Furthermore, this study examines female attitudes, characters, and their roles within the film, as well as the ways in which other roles respond to female roles. This study finds that women are represented in greater proportion and are portrayed more positively in films directed by women. In conclusion, gender portrayal within film is greatly influenced by the actors behind the scenes.
