Abstract

The rate of train accidents in Indonesia is still high, mainly caused by humans related to fatigue while on duty. One of the factors that influence the level of fatigue is the duration of the previous sleep time which causes the level of alertness at work to decrease. This study aims to determine how significantly a person alertness performance decreases due to sleep deprivation using Sustained Attention Test. The study was conducted with laboratory experiments using a train simulator involving twelve participants aged 21.2 ± 0.92 years. The independent variable is the duration of sleeping time before driving with a duration of eight hours for normal conditions and a duration of two hours for sleep deprivation. The dependent variable is the parameter on the Sustained Attention Test which is tested before and after driving using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results showed that there was a increase in the value of the Sustained Attention Test, especially the error and miss parameters which were significant due to sleep deprivation with an average significance of p-value less than 0.05 and increasingly significant with an average of p-value less than 0.01 after driving activity. This shows that sleep deprivation greatly affects the drivers performance while on duty.

Abstract

Briquettes are an essential product for metal mineral processing plants in Indonesia. One good alternative raw materials for briquettes that do not pollute the environment is the palm kernel shell. This research was conducted by making briquettes from palm kernel shells to find optimal variations in carbonization temperature, material mixture, and adhesive mixture. The research was conducted on a laboratory scale. The palm kernel shell and coal kernel were carbonized at various temperatures, namely 450°C, 550°C, and 650°C, then crushed and sieved to 35 mesh. The powdered palm kernel shell and coal that have become powdered charcoal are weighted based on a mixture of powder and the adhesive composition ratio of 40 g. After that, the briquettes were formed under a pressure of 100 kg/cm² on a cylindrical mold with 40 mm. The analyzes carried out were moisture content, ash content, volatile substances content, fixed carbon content, calorific value, compressive strength, density, porosity, and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). The results showed that the briquette from the kernel of the palm kernel shell was optimal at a temperature of 550 ° C with a starch adhesive mixture of 7.5%, a pressure of 100 kg/cm², moisture content of 5.34%, an ash content of 5.81%, a substance content. Volatile amounted to 18.77%, 71.08% for fixed carbon, heating value 7125.86 cal/g. Density of 0.78, porosity of 0.04 and strength of 72.56 kg / cm².

Abstract

The slug flow pattern is one of the most avoiding factors in piping systems due to its destructive characteristics. Research on the criteria of the slug formation is still the concern. The present study focused on finding out the influence of liquid hold-up toward the transition of the flow pattern from stratified to slug pattern. It was conducted on a 50 mm-diameter horizontal acrylic pipe. The visual data was obtained from a fully developed area (180-210 D) by variations of liquid superficial rate (JL) of 0,03-0,3 m/s and gas superficial rate (JG) from 0,7 to 3,77 m/s. The high-speed camera with 2000 fps recording speed was the instrument to obtain the visual data. The measurement of the liquid hold-up is made by Constant Electric Current Method (CECM). The drastic decrement of liquid hold-up value on the wave growth mechanism (JG ≤ 1,88 m/s) indicated the changes in flow patterns from the stratified to the slug pattern, while on the wave coalescence mechanism (JG > 1,88 m/s) the liquid hold-up remains increases. The pattern change from pseudo slug to the slug pattern was not decreasing on its film thickness, yet, it tends to increase the frequency and the liquid slug length.

Abstract

Research on the extraction of gold ore from Pesawaran, , Lampung, Indonesia, was carried out using the agitation leaching method in cyanide solution. This study aimed to obtain information on the use of conventional cyanidation methods for extracting gold from the Pesawaran gold ore. The ore preparation was carried out in the form of crushing, grinding and sieving to obtain samples with fraction sizes of -60 + 100 mesh, -100 +150 mesh, -150 + 200 mesh and -200 mesh. The ore characterization was performed using XRD, XRF, SEM-EDX, and wet chemical analysis. The XRD analysis showed that the main mineral phases were silica, hematite, aluminium hydroxide and orthoclase. The major constituents of the ore were Si (53,628%), Fe (15,996%), K (19,744%) and Al (8,045%). The Au content was determined by wet chemical analysis and was found to be 9.67 ppm. The experimental results show that the highest percentage of gold extraction of 83.33% was obtained using sodium cyanide at a concentration of 1000 ppm, a percent solids of 40% and a grain size of 200 mesh. Higher gold extraction was not achieved despite the use of a high cyanide concentration was probably because the remaining gold was not properly liberated. The results of SEM-EDX analysis showed that the gold grain size was <20 µm, while the grinding was performed only to a sieve size of -200 mesh (74 µm).
