Abstract

This research was conducted with the purpose of knowing the change mechanical properties of Al - Cu squeeze casting product which applied  heat treatment and quenching. This study uses Al with the addition  of 2% and 4% Cu,with the squeeze casting pressures applied are 100, 200, 300 and 400 bar.  Heat treatment temperature constant at 520 ° C and 90 minute holding time. The heat treatment results were observed using Optical Microscopy with 800 times magnification and the hardness was measured using the Vickers hardness test method. . The highest result of hardness is on the pressure  400 bar with the addition of 4% Cu which is 120.53 VHN and the average percentage of the most Al2Cu compounds is 23.125%. Heat treatment followed by quenching process significantly increase the hardness, it is  because of the more solid and smaller granular shape due to quenching

Abstract

Electroplating is a process of settling substances (metal ions) on the electrodes (cathodes) using electrolysis. The occurrence of a precipitate in this process is due to the presence of electrically charged ions moving from an electrode through the electrolyte, the result of the electrolyte will seal on another electrode (cathode). During the process of deposition/deposit takes place a chemical reaction occurs at the electrode and electrolyte both reduction in a certain direction permanently, therefore it requires direct current and a constant voltage. Metal coatings commonly used are copper, nickel, chromium, and others. Electroplating is basically to coat the metal to make it look more attractive and protected from corrosion, and can increase the product's resistance to friction. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of stirrer rpm variations on the thickness and thickness of the A36 steel layer in the decorative nickel-chrome electroplating process. 4 specimens in this study were 30x30x2 (mm). Nickel and chromium coatings have variations in the speed of 72, 102, 132, and 162 (rpm) with a time immersion of 22 minutes and with a temperature of 55-60 ° C. The results of this electroplating process were tested by Vickers's hardness test and observation of microstructure results. The results showed that the faster the rpm, the more hardness was obtained which increased and the thickness of the layer increased. The highest hardness and thickness values are found at a rotational speed of 132 rpm. With a hardness value of 77.5 VHN and a thickness value of 4.55 µm (Nickel) and 13.76 µm (Chrome).

Abstract

The increasing number of motorized vehicles has a direct impact on exhaust gas air pollution. The air pollution in urban areas is dominated by motorized vehicle emissions, along with pollution problems. This study aims to reduce motor vehicle emissions by using a catalytic converter design made from a brass plate catalyst in the shape of a honeycomb. Honeycomb-shaped brass is suitable for catalysts in the catalytic converter. Besides being easy to obtain and cheap in price, the catalyst can reduce and oxidize exhaust gases well, making it suitable as a catalyst material. The method used in this research is the experimental method. It is started from the design of the catalytic converter house and determining the type of catalyst to the process of making the catalytic converter with a honeycomb-shaped brass plate. Then, testing to determine the emission of exhaust gases produced is required. The last step is to compare it without using a catalytic converter or standard conditions. From the results of the emission test, it was found that the use of a catalytic converter made from a brass plate catalyst in the shape of a honeycomb can reduce HC and CO emissions, while CO2 emissions have increased. A decrease in HC gas emissions by 19.1% for a single catalytic converter and 33.7% for a dual catalytic converter is better compared to without using a catalytic converter or standard conditions. Reduced CO gas emissions by 23.8% for a single catalytic converter and 43.1% for a dual catalytic converter are compared to without using a catalytic converter. Meanwhile, CO2 gas emissions increased by 60.7% for a single catalytic converter, and 81.6% for multiple catalytic converters are compared without using a catalytic converter. This is a result of the addition of oxygen to the oxidation process that running smoothly.

Abstract

Research on material engineering is widely developed in the precursors, composition of the material, and technique to create a composite. The layering and vacuum infusion resin are the developing technology to create the composites with the new characteristics and properties. This experiment is intended to find out the characteristics of layering carbon fiber reinforced by resin and is molded with vacuum infusion technique. The specimens of this experiment is layered-carbon fiber composites determined in three, four, five, six, and seven layers. The precursors of 220 and 240 carbon fibers are the main material of the composites. The tests conducted to the specimens are bending and tensile tests. The both tests are treated to reveal the mechanical properties of the composites. The least layers of 220 and 240 carbon fiber result the highest value of bending test, but the most number of carbon fiber layers show the opposite value. The results are reverse in the tensile test. The highest value of the tensile test is achieved by the most layers of carbon fiber, while the lowest value is in the least layers. This result is almost the same with the strain-stress, but overall the graphic is similarly increase to the most layers. Deduction achieved in this experiment is that the number of layers in the carbon fiber composites is significantly influencing the mechanical properties of the composite.

Abstract

The utilization of natural resources as a metal inhibitor is widely researched. The extract of Calliandra leaves is one of the natural resources utilized to prevent the corrosion rate. It contains high tannins, which is a natural compound that can be utilized as an inhibitor of the corrosion rate. The research is aimed to find out the efficiency of Calliandra leaves extract as the natural inhibitor for steel ST-37. The experiment method is applied to vary the extract of Calliandra leaves in the corrosive medium. Meanwhile, the extraction of Calliandra leaves uses the maceration method. The extraction of Calliandra leaves with the solvent uses an evaporation process using a rotary vacuum evaporator. The extract used as the inhibitor is determined in 5%, 10%, and 20% of concentrations. The sample test of corrosion used is steel ST-37 with 4 × 4 cm of dimension and 0.2 cm of thickness. The best inhibition efficiency is 99.73% with an inhibition concentration of 20% in HCl. It shows that the extract of Calliandra leaves works well as an inhibitor, and it is efficient to inhibit the corrosion rate.

Abstract

Electroplating hard chrome is a metal plating process with hard chrome which aims to not only coat as decorative, but also to coat metal surfaces more strongly, according to their use in the engineering world. In addition to decorative properties, the advantages of surface treatment techniques can also increase hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. The purpose of this research is generally to determine the effect of different solution compositions in the electroplating process of hard chrome on the impact strength of the structure on ST-37 steel. This time the specimens are 100mm x 6mm x 6mm and 50mm x 50mm as many as 3 pieces. In this study, the electroplating process of hard chrome was carried out using different parameters of the CrO3 solution composition from previous studies, namely 200 gr/lt, 350 gr/lt, and 400 gr/lt with an immersion time of 22 minutes. The results of this electroplating process were tested by testing the impact strength and microstructure. The results of the study can be concluded that the more the composition of the solution, the higher the impact toughness. The highest impact toughness value is 0.998 joules/mm2 at a solution concentration of 400 grams/litre and the surface results on ST-37 steel after getting hard chrome electroplating treatment is that the surface has Cr elements attached and gets thicker with increasing concentration which is used as a variation with the same immersion time.

Abstract

The slug flow pattern is one of the most avoiding factors in piping systems due to its destructive characteristics. Research on the criteria of the slug formation is still the concern. The present study focused on finding out the influence of liquid hold-up toward the transition of the flow pattern from stratified to slug pattern. It was conducted on a 50 mm-diameter horizontal acrylic pipe. The visual data was obtained from a fully developed area (180-210 D) by variations of liquid superficial rate (JL) of 0,03-0,3 m/s and gas superficial rate (JG) from 0,7 to 3,77 m/s. The high-speed camera with 2000 fps recording speed was the instrument to obtain the visual data. The measurement of the liquid hold-up is made by Constant Electric Current Method (CECM). The drastic decrement of liquid hold-up value on the wave growth mechanism (JG ≤ 1,88 m/s) indicated the changes in flow patterns from the stratified to the slug pattern, while on the wave coalescence mechanism (JG > 1,88 m/s) the liquid hold-up remains increases. The pattern change from pseudo slug to the slug pattern was not decreasing on its film thickness, yet, it tends to increase the frequency and the liquid slug length.

Abstract

Usaha kecil menengah setiap tahun semakin meningkat dimana usaha ini merupakan salah satu pendongkrak perekonomian dan kesejahteraan di suatu daerah. UKM B’Joss adalah salah satu usaha yang berada di daerah kelurahan Sumbersari kota Malang. Usaha ini didirikan oleh Mas Joko Susanto sejak tahun 2006. Usaha ini bergerak dalam bidang makanan yang mana menjual makanan siap santap yaitu tahu telur. Permasalahan yang dialami oleh usaha ini adalah pada proses penggilingan kacang mulai dari dalam bentuk biji hingga halus sesuai keinginan. Karena salah satu yang menjadi penentu rasa dan minat dari pelanggan adalah kehalusan kacang sebagai bahan dasar masakan ini. Dari permasalahan tersebut program pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk membantu mengembangkan alat untuk menggiling kacang agar dapat mempercepat proses produksi serta mendapatkan hasil penggilingan kacang yang baik sesuai dengan keinginan. Metode yang dilakukan pada kegiatan ini adalah dengan memberikan alat penggiling kacang dan pelatihan dalam penggunaannya agar mesin dapat memberikan hasil yang baik serta dapat bertahan lama. Hasil yang didapat dari pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah meningkatnya jumlah produksi khusunya pada hasil kacang yang dihasilkan. Dari yang sebelum adanya alat penggiling kacang ini maksimal kacang halus yang bisa dihasilkan oleh usaha ini maksimum sebesar 4 kg. Setelah diadakan kegiatan ini dan dengan menggunakan alat yang diberikan maksimum kacang yang dihasilkan bisa meningkat hingga 20 kg dengan waktu yang sama. Hal ini tentu sangat berdampak pada jumlah produksi tahu telur yang mana dalam setiap bungkus dibutuhkan sekitar 50 gram kacang halus. Sehingga dalam 1 hari usaha ini bisa membuat 400 bungkus tahu telur yang tentu juga semakin meningkatkan keutungan yang didapat. Selain itu harapan dari pemilik usaha ini adalah agar kegiatan ini bisa dilanjutkan dengan program-program lain di periode yang akan datang, sehingga dengan program pengabdian ini bisa memberikan manfaat yang nyata bagi masyarakat luas.

Abstract

Business development depends on good management and extensive promotion to customers. In addition, courteous prompt response from customer service can be an advantage to influence customer decisions to order products. This community service program uses interview and observation methods to solve problems in this small fiberglass industry. Interviews and observations were conducted to analyze the situation and determine the solution to the problem. Training for the creative industry of Indy Soulart Fiberglass helps them carry out extensive promotions to reach their customers and have good management. Creating a built web page introduces their profile in product processing. Professionalism and punctuality are also displayed on the website to gain customer trust. In addition, customers are given information about contact persons on the web page to make it easier for them when they want to place an order. A project management system is built to manage orders. Business owners can track product creation progress from design to product ready to ship. This system helps the owner to monitor the running of the business. Thus, the business can gradually operate effectively and efficiently. The improved business situation at Indy Soulart Fiberglass shows that providing information on the internet and owner supervision is necessary to keep the business growing. Complete information shared with customers can influence the customer's decision to order the product. Meanwhile, the project management system helps the owner control the product manufacturing process.

Abstract

Partners in this service are MSME Duck Livestock, located in Junrejo, Batu. This partner currently uses conventional methods in carrying out the process of mixing animal feed. Therefore, the purpose of this service is to introduce and implement mechanization in the animal feed mixing process through the use of animal feed mixing machines. The animal feed mixer machine used has a capacity of 10 kg. The motor power used is 0.25 Horsepower (HP). The dimensions of this machine reach 740mm x 310mm x 550mm. This machine is equipped with four straight mixers used in mixing animal feed. Through the evaluation that has been carried out, the use of this animal feed mixing machine is proven to provide significant benefits. Mixing animal feed ingredients, which previously required quite a long time, has been shortened to only 3 minutes for every 10 kg of feed ingredients. This increase in efficiency is significant for MSME Duck Animal Feed. With the animal feed mixing machine, our partners can increase productivity and efficiency in their business. In addition, this machine also helps improve the consistency and quality of mixing feed, thereby positively impacting the growth and health of the ducks they care for. Overall, using animal feed mixing machines in this service has a significant positive impact on MSMEs of Duck Animal Feed. By increasing the productivity, efficiency, and quality of mixing animal feed, it is hoped that our partners can sustainably develop their businesses and increase their income.
