Abstract

Institutional emblems in Islamic higher education are less studied empirically compared to the broader fields of Islamic architecture, manuscript illumination, and decorative arts. This research explores the philosophical, spiritual, and cultural significance of the emblem of Universitas Islam Negeri Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri Purwokerto (UIN Saizu) and details how these meanings form a unified visual identity. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study combines Peircean semiotics with modern visual-grammar theories. Data collection involved in-depth interviews with four key institutional figures responsible for designing, endorsing, and interpreting the emblem, along with document analysis, conducted from January to March 2021. Results reveal that each visual element, such as the term Allah depicted as a mountain, the paired Kudi blades, the green background, the yellow circle, the five-feathered wings, the prostrating figure, the paired feather roots, the book, and the blue gemstone, serves both as an institutional identifier and as a symbol embodying Sufi values like tawhid, tazkiya al-nafs, and ma'rifatulla>h. These elements also encode the civic principles of Pancasila and Banyumas local wisdom. The emblem functions as a visual dhikr, integrating religious devotion, civic duty, and cultural identity into a cohesive institutional symbol. Contribution: This study contributes to the study of Sufism within the semiotics of institutional branding, offering a replicable model for interpreting emblems as condensed expressions of Sufi values and providing Islamic higher-education institutions with a framework for designing visually grounded, culturally rooted, and civically engaged visual identities.

Abstract

Contemporary studies of Qur'anic healing have largely emphasized ruqyah, recitation, listening, devotional consolation, and measurable effects on mental health, while the healing mechanisms embedded in classical Sufi exegesis remain underexplored. This article examines Qur'anic psychospiritual healing by reading al-Ālūsī's Rūḥ al-Maʿānī through Abū Zayd al-Balkhī's psychology of the soul. It argues that al-Ālūsī's interpretation of selected passages concerning emotional disturbance does not merely provide moral exhortation or ritual guidance, but articulates a structured cognitive-Sufi model of psychospiritual healing. Methodologically, the study employs qualitative textual analysis by combining thematic Qur'anic interpretation with conceptual analysis of al-Balkhī's psychology of the soul. It focuses on Q 42:37 on anger, Q 20:68 on fear and panic, Q 16:127–128 on grief, and Q 114:1–4 on obsessive whispering. The findings identify four interrelated healing mechanisms: forgiveness-based regulation, cognitive reassurance, graded patience through the vertical ladder of ṣabr, and divine refuge through istiʿādhah and attentional reorientation. These mechanisms converge into a cognitive-Sufi model of Qur'anic psychospiritual healing based on cognitive-spiritual reorientation, God-centered meaning reconstruction, and disciplined psychospiritual formation. Contribution: This study contributes to Sufi healing studies and Islamic psychology by positioning classical tafsir as a conceptual site of psychospiritual theory. It provides insight into al-Balkhī's psychology of the soul as an analytical lens for reading al-Ālūsī's ishārī exegesis, thereby transforming dispersed Sufi counsels into a structured model of Qur'anic psychospiritual healing.

Abstract

The Sufi tradition addresses human beings holistically, encompassing both their physical (ẓāhir) and non-physical (bāṭin) dimensions. Central to this discourse is al-nafs. This study examines the conceptualization of al-nafs within the thought of the early Sufi figure Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī. Using qualitative document analysis and close reading, this study focuses on al-Sulamī's primary treatise, ʿUyūb al-Nafs wa Mudāwātuhā, supported by classical texts by earlier Sufis such as al-Muḥāsibī, al-Tustarī, al-Tirmidhī, and others, as well as contemporary scholarly literature on al-Sulamī and the Sufi tradition. The findings of this study indicate: (1) The structure of the text ʿUyūb is highly practical and pragmatic, akin to a technical guide intended for the general populace in transforming their al-nafs from a negative condition (ʿuyūb) to a positive one (mudāwāh). (2) The text contains al-Sulamī's core therapeutic ideas, which are systematically categorized into three core categories, namely thought control, action control, and integrated control. Each of these three categories operates in two directions, vertically between an individual and his God and horizontally between an individual and his fellow human beings. Contribution: This study offers a novel framework of three controls for understanding al-Sulamī's concept of al-nafs transformation. By systematically conceptualizing this early Sufi framework, it bridges classical Islamic spiritual literature with character education and Islamic psychology based on the Sufi tradition.

Abstract

Adversity, such as illness, loss, suffering, and awareness of death, disrupts assumptions about the self, life's purpose, justice, and the world's predictability. This study develops a conceptual model of Sufistic coping and spiritual adaptation based on Said Nursi's Risale-i Nur. Using a qualitative interpretive design, the study analyzes selected passages from the Risale-i Nur and places them in dialogue with contemporary scholarship on religious coping and meaning-making. The analysis identifies five interrelated mechanisms: theological reappraisal of adversity, Qur'anic reflection and meaning reconstruction, investigative faith, divine reliance combined with positive action, and text-based communal reinforcement. These mechanisms facilitate meaning reconstruction, emotional reorientation, moral agency, hope, and strengthened relationships with God and community. The findings suggest that Nursi conceptualizes spiritual adaptation not as eliminating suffering, but as actively transforming its meaning while sustaining trust in God, ethical responsibility, purposeful action, and relational connection. Contribution: This study provides a theoretical framework for further textual, empirical, and psychoeducational research on Islamic spiritual coping based on Said Nursi's Risale-i Nur.

Abstract

Contemporary marriage faces changing family values, declining marriage intentions, and increasing marital problems, requiring an understanding of marriage as an ethical, spiritual, and human-development process. This study reconstructs Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī’s conception of maqāṣid al-zawāj in Kitāb Adab al-Nikāḥ of Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn. Using qualitative library research, content analysis, hermeneutic interpretation, and a maqāṣid al-sharīʿa approach, it identifies five interconnected purposes of marriage: taḥṣīl al-walad, kasr al-shahwah, tarwīḥ al-nafs, tafrīgh al-qalb, and mujāhadat al-nafs. These encompass generational continuity, sexual and moral regulation, psychological tranquility, relief from domestic burdens, and spiritual discipline. Their realization depends on marital ethics, mutual rights and obligations, cooperation, patience, and dignified conflict management. Spouse selection prioritizes religious commitment and moral character, while taṣfiyat al-qulūb and tazkiyat al-nufūs support spiritual development. The study proposes a cyclical model integrating marital purposes, ethical practices, spouse selection, and spiritual cultivation to strengthen family maṣlaḥa, human flourishing, and sustainable family development. Contribution: This article extends the analytical horizon of maqāṣid al-sharīʿa by linking the preservation of essential interests to inner moral formation and the cultivation of a flourishing family life.
