Abstract

Several studies on air-cooled battery thermal management systems (BTMSs) have shown that improvement can be achieved through redesign of the BTMSs. Recent studies have achieved improvements in managing the temperature in the system, but mostly with an increase in pressure drop. It is therefore imperative to carry out an extended study or redesign of the existing designs to overcome these challenges. In this work, a standard Z-type BTMS, which has a flat divergence plenum, was redesigned to have a step-like divergence plenum of variable step height. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach was adopted to investigate the thermal and airflow performance of the BTMSs. The CFD methodology was validated by comparing its results with experimental data in the literature. Various step height configurations were considered for 3-step and 4-step models. Findings from the result revealed that the variable step height design enhances the cooling performance of the battery pack. For instance, a 3-step model with step heights of 3, 6, and 6 mm offered the least pressure drop and maximum temperature difference, and when compared with the model with a constant step height of 5, 5, and 5 mm, it yielded reductions of 3.4% and 21.6%, respectively. By increasing the inlet airflow velocity, the 4-step cases generally improved. Abstract

Welfare technology has made a significant impact on society, supporting people´s communication, independence, and day-to-day living. This study aims to investigate university students' knowledge of welfare technologies related to smart active aging. The research was guided by the following questions: 1: What do Slovak university students know about welfare technologies? 2: How are welfare technologies used in the households of university students and their relatives? An online interview survey with reflexive thematic analysis was conducted with 120 university students at two universities in Slovakia. Findings show four themes that were identified: (1) Different interpretations of welfare technologies. (2) Broadening students’ knowledge about welfare smart technologies. (3) Attitudes towards smart and welfare technologies. (4) Gap in practical usage of welfare technologies. Welfare technology is a new topic connected to active aging. Primarily, the younger generation, as proved, has low knowledge on this theme. The novelty of the study lies in connecting the welfare technology concept with the education of the younger generation. Welfare technologies have the potential to promote positive intergenerational relationships, autonomy, and mental and physical well-being among older adults. As for improvements, smart active aging and welfare technology concepts should be incorporated more intensively into higher education. Abstract

This research introduces a pioneering solution to the challenges posed by gastrointestinal tract (GI) cancer in radiation therapy, focusing on the imperative task of precise organ segmentation for minimizing radiation-induced damage. GI imaging has historically used manual demarcation, which is laborious and uncomfortable for patients. We address this by introducing the ResECA-U-Net deep learning model, a novel combination of the U-Net and ResNet34 architectures. Furthermore, we further augment its functionality by incorporating the Efficient Channel Attention (ECA-Net) methodology. By utilizing data from the UW-Madison Carbone Cancer Center, we carefully investigate several image processing techniques designed to capture critical local characteristics. With its foundation in computer vision concepts, the ResECA-U-Net model is excellent at extracting fine details from GI images. Sophisticated metrics such as intersection over union (IoU) and the dice coefficient are used to evaluate performance. Our study's outcomes demonstrate the effectiveness of the suggested method, yielding an impressive 96.27% Dice coefficient and 91.48% IoU. These results highlight the significant contribution that our strategy has made to the advancement of cancer therapy. Beyond its scientific merits, this work has the potential to significantly enhance cancer patients' quality of life and provide better long-term outcomes. Abstract

Biochar is a value-added product that can be used for many purposes, particularly for environmental and agricultural purposes. In this study, pyrolysis at 450–500 °C was used to upgrade urban waste such as disposable bamboo chopsticks (DBCs) into biochar. The properties of DBC biochar were analyzed, and the biochar was subsequently used to cultivate Romaine lettuce to assess its potential as a soil amendment. Its properties, including specific surface area (SSA), pore size, pore volume, pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), contents of carbon (C), hydrogen (H), nitrogen (N), oxygen (O), macronutrient content, and the atomic ratio of H/C, O/C, (O+N)/C, and C/N, were analyzed. The experimental pots consisted of four treatments, each with ten replicates: unamended soil (TC), soil amended with 10% (w/w) vermicompost (TV), soil amended with 10% vermicompost mixed with 1.5% biochar (TVB1.5), and soil amended with 10% vermicompost mixed with 2.5% biochar (TVB2.5). Fundamental physicochemical soil properties and plant yield (plant height, leaf width, number of leaves, and fresh weight) were investigated. The results indicated that the DBC biochar was neutral (pH 6.80) and had a high CEC (10.86 cmol/kg), 66.80% C, 3.76% H, 25.93% O, and 0.61% N. It had mesopores (39.077 Å), a large SSA (0.542 m2/g), and a pore volume of 0.005 cc/g. The biochar exhibited high aromaticity and hydrophobicity. Based on these results, the DBC biochar has the potential to be used as a soil amendment: it significantly enhances soil quality and increases plant yields. Abstract

Sustainability is defined as socio-economic accomplishment without compromising the natural environment. The objective of the research is to assess the role of the government in driving sustainability as explained in the UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs). The research used content analysis and survey methods to understand the critical role of the government in achieving sustainable development and the perceptions of Saudi Arabian residents in this regard. The findings of the content analysis showed that the role of government at all levels is important to achieving sustainable development. The survey results also support the findings of the content analysis and show that the government's role in attaining sustainability is significant. All the variables of sustainability about government role proved to be very important. The research provided appropriate policy and practical implementation to facilitate the achievement of sustainability. The policy implications are that the government at all levels needs to ensure appropriate laws, regulations, codes, and the adoption of those rules to drive sustainable development. They also ensure that they have allocated resources to achieve sustainable development. In practical terms, the government should devise strategies for all levels of government to drive sustainable development. Abstract

Generation Z faces diverse challenges in education amidst the swift evolution of technology. This study investigates the factors shaping Generation Z's acceptance and adoption of AI and Cloud-based applications in Oman's higher education sector. Despite limited attention to this area in Oman and the Gulf Cooperative Council countries (GCC), this research addresses the gap by employing the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) framework, recognized for its effectiveness in understanding technology adoption. Through a quantitative approach, Generation Z students in Omani higher education institutions were surveyed, and SmartPLS was utilized for analysis. Results indicate a significant positive relationship between all UTAUT antecedent factors, with Performance Expectancy being non-significant. This study offers novel insights into global understandings of Generation Z's learning trends with AI and Cloud-based applications in higher education, aiming to enhance pedagogical approaches. Notably, it pioneers such efforts within the GCC context. Recommendations for similar research in other GCC countries are provided to enrich regional perspectives. Abstract

E-commerce live streaming has experienced a significant and rapid increase in recent years, establishing itself as a vital catalyst for the growth of the e-commerce business. This research delves into the influence of e-commerce live streaming attributes, namely, authenticity, interactivity, and entertainment, on consumers' purchase intentions. It is based on the Stimulus‒Organism‒Response (SOR) theory and focuses on customer flow experience and hedonic shopping value. To evaluate the study model, the authors gathered survey data from 360 live streaming e-commerce customers and used structural equation modeling. The results indicate that client purchase intentions in e-commerce live streaming are positively influenced by authenticity, interactivity, and entertainment. Authenticity, entertainment, and interaction all contribute to enhancing consumers' flow experience in e-commerce live streaming, with interactivity being the most influential factor. The phenomenon of flow experience has a beneficial impact on the purchasing intentions of clients engaged in e-commerce live streaming. The flow experience serves as an intermediary between the characteristics of e-commerce live streaming and consumers' intentions to make purchases. Hedonic shopping value affects the relationship between the flow experience and the customer's intention to make a purchase. Put simply, when customers have a strong perception of the pleasure they derive from shopping, their intention to make purchases becomes more profound when they are influenced by the state of flow. This study not only contributes to the body of knowledge regarding the correlation between the attributes of e-commerce live streaming and consumer receptiveness, but it also provides businesses and platforms that utilize e-commerce live streaming with actionable recommendations. Abstract

The way how multinational corporations integrate CSR activities into their business practices and communicate them to stakeholders can significantly impact their market position and business reputation. This paper evaluates the perceived level of preparedness for non-financial reporting associated with social, environmental, and economic CSR activities in selected multinational corporations operating in the Czech Republic. A questionnaire survey for this research was conducted between September 2021 and January 2022, targeting a specific group of multinational corporations established in EU countries and operating in the Czech Republic. As non-financial reporting is expected to be extended to a considerably large number of companies in the near future, this research has high practical relevance for stakeholders involved in decision-making processes. Abstract

This study addresses a critical gap in the literature by examining the impact of CO2emissions on public debt in Malaysia, employing a non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach spanning from 1980 to 2020. This methodology captures the non-linear relationship between CO2 emissions and public debt, providing nuanced insights into how environmental factors shape fiscal dynamics. Despite encountering challenges arising from the limited body of literature on this specific relationship, the study highlights key findings with profound implications for policymakers. The inverse correlation between trade openness and public debt underscores the influence of international trade on Malaysia's fiscal landscape, while a positive association between investment and public debt emphasizes the importance of prudent debt management for economic growth. Furthermore, the negative relationship between higher foreign direct investment and long-term public debt highlights the need to foster an investor-friendly environment. A pivotal contribution is the confirmation of a positive link between CO2 emissions and public debt, urging policymakers to prioritize emission reduction strategies, implement carbon pricing, and promote green technologies. Objectives: This paper aims to comprehensively explore the implications of Big Data within the realm of accounting, dissecting both its potential advantages and the hurdles it presents. The primary goal is to introduce and delineate the potential benefits of Big Data integration in accounting practices. Additionally, it seeks to identify and thoroughly examine the challenges impeding the seamless assimilation of Big Data into accounting methodologies. By delving into diverse applications, including Auditing, Cost Management, and financial reporting, this study aims to shed light on the multifaceted nature of Big Data's role in accounting. Methods/Analysis: This paper commences with an introduction to the concept of Big Data and its anticipated advantages for accounting practices. It proceeds to conduct a meticulous review and synthesis of existing literature, dissecting the intricate relationship between Big Data and accounting. Through this review, it emphasizes the stumbling blocks encountered in integrating Big Data. Subsequently, it offers a detailed exploration of Big Data's applications in accounting. Findings: Big Data exhibits the potential to substantially transform accounting practices, offering avenues for superior decision-making and analysis.
