Abstract

This study aimed to determine students’ learning outcomes in Grade X at MA Yayasan Islam Indonesia Pulau Sebatik by applying cooperative learning model-Jigsaw type on the hydrocarbons material. This type of study was a quasi-experimental research with non-randomized pretest-posttest control group design. The population in this study was students of class X MA YIIPS academic year 2014/2015 which amounted of 42 students and consisted of 2 classes. The sample in this study was class XA MA YIIPS (n = 22) as the experiment class and class XB MA YIPS (n = 22) as the control class. The result of data analysis in the experiment class obtained X̅1 value of 78.81 with a standard deviation of 10.41, and in the control class obtained X̅2 value was 70.72 with a standard deviation of 11.55. The result of hypothesis test was tcount > ttable (8.17 > 1.67) with significant level (α) of 0.05 and degree of freedom of 42. This result indicated that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted, so it can be concluded that the students’ learning outcomes of chemistry on the hydrocarbons material treated with cooperative learning model-Jigsaw type is better than untreated class.

Abstract

Jackfruit’s peel contains lignocellulosic compounds that potential for fabrication of charcoal and useful for adsorbing heavy metals. Based on this, then it was conducted a study on the utilization of charcoal from jackfruit’s peel to be used as adsorbent on cadmium and nickel. The analysis process of this research was conducted by using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (SSA). The results showed that charcoal’s characteristics from jackfruit’s peel contained of 4.4% water, 9.3% ash, and biomass content that can be used as an absorbent was 86.3%. The optimum adsorption of charcoal from jackfruit’s peel for cadmium ion was contact time of 120 minutes, pH 7 and concentration of 40 mg/L with the percentages of penetration respectively were 84.65%, 99.10%, and 99.43%. On the other hand, for nickel was 150 minutes of contact time, pH 5, and concentration of 20 mg/L with percentage of penetration were 87.95%, 91.75%, and 75.15% respectively.

Abstract

Chitosan has functional groups of an amine group (-NH2) that acts as a coagulant dyestuff, a protein binder, and an amino acid; and a hydroxyl group (-OH). The present of these functional groups cause high chemical reactivity of chitosan. Chitosan can be used as a dietary supplement of rooster. This study aimed to determine the effect of chitosan as a dietary supplement on fattening rooster. Fattening rooster can be seen from an increase of weight per week. This study provided bran as much as 200 gr/animal/day, then the bran was added with chitosan solutions as each concentration. The results obtained for the chicken A which given bran with chitosan solution increased in body weight of 0.1 kg at the first week, while for the chicken given bran without chitosan increased in body weight of 0.1 kg at the third week. For the chicken B which given bran with chitosan increased in body weight of 0.1 kg at the first week, while for the chicken given bran without chitosan increased in body weight of 0.1 kg at the second week. Based on the data for ± 1 months of study obtained that good chitosan concentrations used in this study for the chicken A were at concentrations of 6% and 8% by increasing each of 0.5 kg, while for the chicken B was at a concentration of 6% by increasing of 0.6 kg.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of mango seed extract concentration on the rate of corrosion of iron nails in corrosive medium of NaCl solution and seawater as comparison. The research begins with maceration of mango seeds followed by evaporation to produce the extract as an inhibitor with a variation of concentration 1 - 5%. The method of determining the corrosion rate was the weight loss method with soaking for 7 days. The results showed that the highest corrosion inhibition efficiency occurred at 3% concentration for immersion with corrosive medium of 3% NaCl and 2% concentration for soaking in sea water with efficiency respectively 15.34% and 10.63%. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the increasing concentration of mango seed extract resulted in the efficiency effect on corrosion of nails.

Abstract

One of the potential plantations in Dolo and Labuan area is coconut plant. Coconut water as one of the coconut product has not been widely used, even it contains many minerals. Potassium contained in coconut water can be utilized an additional mineral intake for human. This study aimed to determine potassium (K) levels in green coconut (coconut viridis) water from Dolo and Labuan areas using spectrophotometric. The results showed that the average concentration of K in green coconut water samples from Dolo area was 162 ppm, while from Labuan area was 154 ppm. This study concluded that the higher level of potassium is in green coconut water samples from Dolo area.

This research type was a quasi-experiment with design equivalent pretest-posttest design. The sample used in this research was the students of class XI MIPA 3 as the experiment with the amount of 32 students and students of class XI MIPA 4 as the control class with the amount of 33 students. The result of data analysis obtained, the mean value of experiment class ( ) was 74.03 and the control class ( ) was 69.84. The average of students’ activity in the experimental and control class respectively was 56.66%, and 56.66% that was categorized as active enough. The result of hypothesis testing with two-party of t-test statistic obtained was –ttable< tcount> +ttable(tcount = 5.37 dan ttable = 1.67) with a significance level α = 0.05 and degrees of freedom 63, H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted based on the results of data analysis. So it can be concluded that there is influence of PBL model using LS pattern on the quality of chemistry learning in SMAN 1 Banawa.

Abstract

Adsorbent has been widely used in the purification of used cooking oil to improve their quality. This study aimed to determine the quality of cooking oil after adsorbing with tamarindus indica L. seeds. Parameters of the oil quality were color, free fatty acid, peroxide number, and moisture levels. The oil color was determined using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, free fatty acid level using acid-base titration method, peroxide number level using iodometric titration method, and moisture level using gravimetric method. Concentration of adsorbent on the adsorption process varied by 1%, 3% and 5% with two types of cooking oil sample namely traditional cooking oil and brand X cooking oil. The results showed that the oil color became brighter by adding adsorbent. Free fatty acid, peroxide number, and moisture levels decreased by increasing the adsorbent concentration. The best result was obtained at 5% adsorbent concentration. Traditional cooking oil decreased in absorbance from 0.2955 to 0.0610, free fatty acid level decreased from 2.7300% to 0.8300%, peroxide number level decreased from 7 meq/kg to 2.4 meq/kg, and moisture level decreased from 1.5191% to 0.1495%. While for the cooking oil of brand X decreased in absorbance from 0.4355 to 0.1860, free fatty acid level decreased from 1.1900% to 0.6600%, peroxide number level decreased from 4 meq/kg to 1.3 meq/kg, and moisture level decreased from 1.4198% to 0.1197%.
