Abstract

This article explains the Saudi Arabian oil crisis of 2014-2016. In 2014, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) had been expected to cut production to stabilize the market  and control the price of oil,but instead of reducing their own production, Saudi Arabia pushed OPEC to let the market control the price of of oil. This raised the question of why Saudi Arabia led the OPEC push to let the price decline. The purpose of this article is to understand the reasons behind Saudi Arabia’s efforts as prices plummeted fron 2014 until 2016. This paper explores Saudi Arabia as the de facto leader of OPEC using geopolitical purposes to influences the rest of OPEC and to weaken their opponents including Iran, Iraq and Russia.

Abstract

This paper attempts to investigate the reasons behind the negative sentiments directed towards Chinese Indonesians from an International Relations (IR) perspective. By tracing back the treatment of the New Order government towards ethnic Chinese, it was found that such demonization initially happened due to two politically motivated reasons. Firstly, as part of de-Soekarnoization done by the New Order, the Chinese were outcast because Chinese identity does not conform to the “Indonesian identity”, which was in essence, the Javanese identity. Secondly, the condition reflected the change in Indonesian foreign policy which drifted apart from People’s Republic of China (PRC) as the latter was suspected to be involved in September 30 Movement. Then, I argue that due to those reasons, coupled by systematic maltreatment from the New Order Government, Chinese Indonesians were constructed as the “others”, that is, as non-Indonesians. Such construct has been deeply embedded such that reconciliation attempts done by the Reformation Era government were not sufficient enough to stop ethnic discrimination towards Chinese Indonesians from happening even until the present.

Abstract

In the 21st century, the Indo-Pacific security situation has undergone rapid changes, mainly due to China's maritime expansion and the weakening of US influence in the region. Responding to this situation, India and Japan, as regional powers, decided to work together. Following a speech by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2007, India and Japan met about maritime security. Following Abe's re-election as Prime Minister in 2012, Japan expanded it's security scope and began seeing India as an important security partner. At the same time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Act East' policy pushed India to take a more proactive role in the eastern region, including Japan. India and Japan then aligned their strategic policies to strengthen maritime cooperation. This article explains the implementation of Indian-Japanese maritime cooperation in balancing China in the Indo-Pacific.

Abstract

This study aims to provide a description of Chinese-Indonesian identity in the post-New Order era. Under the previous authoritarian regime, public expression of Chinese identity in all social fields, such as culture, language and politics, was officially suppressed by the government through its assimilation policy. A person could be Chinese or Indonesian, but not both. Since the collapse of the New Order government in 1998, Indonesia has begun the process of democratization, and the old Indonesian identity and cultural heritage of Indonesia has been "liberated". Now there is an urgent need to re-examine the identity of the Chinese. One channel for expressing Chinese ethnic identity is through ethnic media, such as Chinese newspapers which this paper will focus on. Based on this context, this paper aims to see what Chinese-Indonesian identities are presented in Chinese-language Indonesian newspapers in the post-New Order era by analyzing their reporting and discussion regarding main domestic political events.
