Abstract

Constructed stormwater wetlands are manmade, shallow, and extensively vegetated water bodies which promote runoff volume and peak flow reduction, and also treat stormwater runoff quality. Researchers have noted that treatment processes of runoff in a constructed wetland are influenced by a range of hydraulic factors, which can vary during a rainfall event, and their influence on treatment can also vary as the event progresses. Variation in hydraulic factors during an event can only be generated using a detailed modelling approach, which was adopted in this research by developing a hydraulic conceptual model. The developed model was calibrated using trial and error procedures by comparing the model outflow with the measured field outflow data. The accuracy of the developed model was analyzed using a well-known statistical analysis method developed based on the regression analysis technique. The analysis results show that the developed model is satisfactory.

Abstract

Construction is a multidisciplinary activity in which effective communication between parties is essential for successful construction projects. However, the construction industry has been characterised by fragmentation, which prevents seamless communication. This problem has been further exacerbated by the need to communicate over distance within a time constraint in an increasingly interconnected and globalised construction sector. This has brought a particular challenge to the education sector in preparing the future graduates to work in this context. The paper reports on an on-going Hewlett Packard-sponsored project to implement an innovative learning approach which consists of distanced collaboration between students from different disciplines from two Universities in the UK and Canada. The empirical work involved interviews and questionnaire survey at different stages of the project. The preliminary findings reveal the impact of disciplinary training on the development of effective virtual collaboration, although this has been moderated, to some extent, by their earlier (not so positive) experience during the course of the project. The research provides a material for further reflection and may serve as a useful consideration for future development of a guiding framework for effective training of built environment professionals.

Abstract

In this study, behaviour of reinforced concrete columns strengthened using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP; glass fiber and carbon fiber) after fire exposure are discussed. After being exposed to fire as high as 720oC for 180 minutes, the specimens showed concrete and  reinforcement strength degradation, even though there was no carbonation. It was found that specimens wrapped by carbon fiber showed better compressive strength but less ductility compared to specimens wrapped by glass fiber. It was also found that the low initial compressive strength did not decrease FRP confinement effectiveness. Increase of wrapped concrete com­pressive strength was evident despite the low initial strength (<17 MPa). Strength esti­mation using ACI 440.2R-08 formula, which is originally for wrapped plain concrete without fire heat exposure, underestimated the compressive strength. In the proposed formula, the initial compressive strength (f’co) should be adjusted by considering the modulus elasticity and strain limitation to have more precise estimation.

Abstract

A threat-independent approach is usually utilized for progressive collapse analysis of buildings. This approach is referenced in the current guidelines such as “Progressive Collapse Analysis and Design Guidelines for New Federal Office Buildings and Major Modernization Projects” by the U.S. General Service Administration and “Design of Buildings to Resist Progressive Collapse” by the U.S. Department of Defence. However, more studies are required to accurately observe the influence of structural parameters to the response of structures in progressive collapse phenomenon. A parametric study was conducted using advanced nonlinear finite element analysis to assess the utility of the procedures in these documents. The results of the numerical simulations show that a variation of the beam dimensions moderately affects the dynamic load factor. The load factor increases as the beam dimensions increase. Other parameters such as the column dimensions, number of storeys and span lengths, have only negligible effects on the value of the dynamic load factor.

Abstract

The opening of free market in 2003, leads into the stridently escalating business competition both in domestic and global market. The company, therefore, is trying to win the competition by obtaining ISO 9000 certification which can be applied in the construction business. The purpose of the research is to investigate the reason, the obstacles, the gap between expectation and reality of using ISO 9000, as well as the main priority to be implemented in the company. This research uses survey on contractor companies in Surabaya and Gresik which has implemented ISO 9000. The statistical results show that the main reason to implement ISO 9000 is to increase consistency and to improve its quality. Meanwhile, the main obstacle is time constraint to complete the implementation. Companies still need to increase customer satisfaction and attend on customer focus principle to increase the quality of their outcomes. Abstract in Bahasa Indonesia : Akibat terbukanya perdagangan bebas di tahun 2003, persaingan bisnis makin meningkat tajam baik di pasar domestik (nasional) maupun global (internasional). Salah satu upaya perusahaan untuk memenangkan persaingan dengan peningkatan mutu produk atau jasa adalah mendapatkan sertifikasi ISO 9000 yang dapat diterapkan juga dalam bisnis konstruksi. Adapun tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui alasan, hambatan, perbedaaan antara harapan dan realita, dan prioritas utama ISO 9000 yang harus diterapkan oleh perusahaan. Penelitian ini menggunakan survei terhadap perusahaan-perusahaan kontraktor di Surabaya dan Gresik yang sudah menerapkan ISO 9000. Hasil analisa statistik menunjukkan bahwa perusahaan menerapkan ISO 9000 terutama agar mencapai konsistensi dalam pelaksanaan dan memperbaiki mutu. Sedangkan hambatan terbesar yaitu waktu yang diperlukan untuk melengkapi penerapan. Perusahaan-perusahaan kontraktor tersebut masih perlu meningkatkan kepuasan pelanggan dan menerapkan prinsip fokus pelanggan sebagai prioritas utama untuk meningkatkan mutu perusahaan.

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the chicken-foot foundation using the finite element method. The foundation is considered as a reinforced concrete slab resting on a number of reinforced concrete pipes filled with and surrounded by in-situ soil. The soil and the pipes were modelled by isoparametric solid elements while the slab was modelled by isoparametric thick-plate elements. The study was intended to illustrate the basic mechanism of the chicken-foot foundation. Three cases have been considered for the parametric studies. The parameters investigated are thickness of slab, length of pipes and spacing between pipes. It is shown that such a foundation improves the behaviour of the raft foundation. It is also found that all the parameters used in the parametric studies influence the behaviour of the chicken-foot foundation.

Abstract

Motorcycle provides several positive aspects in providing mobility, but its rapid increase in ownership and usage should be anticipated. The West Java Province has the highest number of population in Indonesia, which is potential to have the highest number of motorcycle. This study aims to develop a prediction model of motorcycle number and to develop a model of motorcycle ownership. Two models are proposed to predict the motorcycle growth in West Java, with gross regional domestic product and number of population as the independent variables. Four ordered probit models are proposed to explain motorcycle ownership in Bandung City based on economic, personal, user’s travel behavior, and motorcycle characteristics. This study explains that the increase of motorcycle ownership was not influenced by economic condition only, but also by travel behavior and their activity. Thus, besides economic aspects, the anticipation should also be based on travel and activity changes of the user.

Abstract

The Spectral Analysis of Surface Wave (SASW) method is a non-destructive in situ seismic technique used to assess and evaluate the material stiffness (dynamic elastic modulus) and thickness of pavement layers at low strains. These values can be used analytically to calculate load capacities in order to predict the performance of pavement system. The SASW method is based on the dispersion phenomena of Rayleigh waves in layered media. In order to get the actual shear wave velocities, 2-D and 3-D models are used in the simulation of the inversion process for best fitting between theoretical and empirical dispersion curves. The objective of this study is to simulate and compare the 2-D and 3-D model of SASW analysis in the construction of the theoretical dispersion curve for pavement structure evaluation. The result showed that the dispersion curve from the 3-D model was similar with the dispersion curve of the actual pavement profile compared to the 2-D model. The wave velocity profiles also showed that the 3-D model used in the SASW analysis is able to detect all the distinct layers of flexible pavement units.

Abstract

Buckling of a through girder generally is predicted by the so called U-frame approach which treats the compressed top flanges as compression members restrained elastically by the web stiffness. This study used a line-type finite element analysis to examine buckling behaviour of through girders, both a single span girder and a continuous girder. The elastic buckling loads were plotted for a range of span to height ratio.

Abstract

While South Africa has the necessary legislative and policy frameworks in housing and other sectors that could have contributed to the development of co-operative housing approach, little is done to promote it. To that end, this paper provides the SWOT (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis of 6 housing co-operatives in South Africa. Based on the data generated from the multi-case study conducted and the administration of self addressed questionnaires, a SWOT analysis was done in order to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the housing co-operatives, with a view to developing sustainable strategies. Results from the study shows that the housing co-operatives are faced with many threats arising from the external environment and many weaknesses arising from the inadequate internal resources and circumstances. One of the strategies proposed is that there should be formulation and implementation of appropriate policies and legislation beneficial to the housing co-operatives by the government.
