This study aims to reveal the communication patterns of social community movements that seek to gain economic access to oil and gas mining operation in Tiaka. The social movement of the local community stems from the ban of fishers, originated from the coastal villages in the oil and gas circle of Tiaka, to enter Sapa Mataha, the coral reefs that become fishing ground that promises life for fishermen families around mainly Bajo ethnic for decades. The research method used is interpretative perspective with case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations and document reviews. The results show that community leaders (actors) build solidity and collective narratives that unite different ethnic groups around the affected areas of Tiaka oil and gas mining operation. The main messages that arise in the communication activities from the awareness, socialization, and advocacy stages are the idioms of sapa mataha, tanah ulayat, indigenous peoples and CSR. The discourse is constructed from the ethnic identity of Bajo and Taa’. The actors’ awareness and advocacy efforts utilize a variety of communication media including face to face meetings, community meetings, focus group discussions (FGD), pamphlet, blogs on the internet and Facebook. This communication process then spawned community awareness, thus forming ethnic-based forums and regional associations for mobilizing, rallies and up to sabotage efforts.

Bakar Tongkang tradition in Rokan Hilir Regency is a part of custom or tradition inherited from generation to generation from Chinese custom. It is a form of gratitude to Kie Ong Ya (God of the sea) by burning a barge (tongkang) after praying. This research uses ethnography of communication by collecting descriptive data on how social meanings are used and communication behavior has been done by the society of Bagansiapi-api in Bakar Tongkang tradition. This research discusses communicative situation, events and communicative acts related to Bakar Tongkang ritual. Informants are ethnic Chinese community leaders in Bagansiapi-api and chief of Tourism Department of Rolan Hilir Regency. Data are collected through interviews and observation. The result shows the communicative situation of Bakar Tongkang tradition consists of the location of the implementation of this tradition, tongkang (barge) and participants who carry out the tradition. This tradition is held in the Yin Hock King Temple. Communicative events of Bakar Tongkang tradition include value, message and purpose of holding the tradition. The value of this tradition is cultural value although it relates to Konghucu ritual. The message of this tradition is the expression of gratitude and remembrance of the service of Ki Ong Ya who has saved their ancestors in 1825 and as a part of celebrating the birthday of the God.

In today’s digital era, more and more information is delivered through social media, one of which is vlog which is currently a trend among high school students. Teacher as one of the main educators for high school students is still underestimate the content of social media. Teachers are more concerned about negative impact of social media. This study aims to determine the impact of information in the media on students’ perceptions of social media (vlog) content, the impact of media information on teacher attitudes, and the impact of teacher attitudes on high school students’ perceptions of vlog. This research uses a positivist paradigm with survey method by using path analysis. The result shows that (1) the information exposure in the media has influenced the attitudes of the teachers, (2) the information exposure in the media has influenced the perception of high school students, and (3) the attitude of teachers also has influenced the perception of high school students about the content in social media (vlog).

Research studies in the western context indicated that the authors and illustrators have shown effort to depict character education effectively through children’s picture books. Conversely, in Indonesia, only few research studies regarding character education. A study was focused on how to use the books to promote character education. Another research was examining the types of moral values. None of the existed studies investigated approach to depict character education in Indonesia children’s picture books. Using semiotic method, this study indicated that among all significant components of portraying character education, the children’s books missed the two pivotal components, which are visual imagery and semiotic components.

This research attempts to revisit the research on the youth preferences on several quit-smoking Public Service Advertisements (PSA). These preferences are including several factors, such as different form, structure, and content of persuasive messages. The objective of this research is to test the possibility of the linkage between the smoking behaviors and smokers’ preferences on various quit-smoking advertisements, with 104 university students who labeled themselves as smokers took part in the survey. The results show that respondents are mostly heavy smokers and they tend to have both the negative and positive attitudes towards smoking. On the other hand, all respondents have seen at least one quit-smoking PSA. This shows that quit-smoking PSAs are solely not adequately effective to change smoking behaviors. The respondents tend to favor the PSAs with less fear-appeal, more rational messages with statistics, and in the form of audio-visual.

Technology always has two faces. Radicalism found its heaven when the Internet can be used as a media for propaganda and for recruiting new members. On the contrary, the Internet could also be used to counter radicalism. Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Terorisme (BNPT) in collaboration with Pusat Media Damai (PMD) has three websites such as jalandamai.org, damailahindonesiaku.com, dan damai.id to support that mission. Using qualitative content analysis, this research aims to describe the way of these websites are fighting online radicalism. This research found that there are two steps that these websites took to propagate anti radicalism, by sensitizing the spread of radicalism and what kind of actual action that can be done to against it.

The purpose of this study is to understand the interpretation of the environmental aspects during the Sriwijaya kingdom in the 7th century. The interpretation is based on text written on the script of the Prasasti Talang Tuwo (Talang Tuwo inscription), the one and only inscription talking about the environmental arrangement. This study deploys a discourse analysis by Mangineau which discusses the discourse from three aspects: content, process, and emergence. Data are analyzed by qualitative method using environmental communication perspective. This study indicates that (a) the social situation in Sriwijaya’s era had determined the environmental interpretation; (b) the process occurred shows social context playing significant role, and (c) it shows how this process was taking place in certain stages.

This study aims to determine the form of spatialization and monopolistic practices carried out by Emtek Group. This research uses descriptive qualitative in the critical analysis perspective of the Political Economy of Communication Theory by Vincent Mosco. The political economy of communication theory is used to describe the spatialization in the form of horizontal integration and vertical integration to strengthen the organization and to dominate market. This research uses documentation data collection techniques by observing and analyzing the business units of the Emtek Group and the historical record establishment of Emtek Group including the shift of shareholders from Emtek Group and its subsidiaries. The result shows that the spatialization carried out by Emtek Group has caused monopoly, monopsony and conglomeration practices that can threaten the principle of fair business competition. In addition, the practice of conglomeration also provides an imbalance effect on television content, between programs containing entertainment with information programs. Seeing these conditions, society must participate in terms of surveillance by acting as a watchdog, so that media corporations can be controlled more objectively. The government should provide detail information about the proportion between information and entertainment in television program content, and should restrict media cross-ownership.

This study examines the role and elements of infographics for strengthening reputation of the government public relations conducted by the Special Task Force of the Government Public Relations on a single narrative related to the socialization of economic policy packages. This study uses case study method based on the perspective of the theory of reputation. The result shows that info graphics are able to make government’s message can be communicated attractively and support a reputation. It concludes (1) info graphics successfully synergize delivery of 13 single narratives about economic policy package through some form of design published in social media; (2) elements of info graphics are strengthened by the used of hashtag and logo “Indonesia Good” in the design of the content of policy packages supported by the four sides of reputation (credibility, trustworthiness, reliability, and responsibility), through the realization of a number of components to build a reputation namely core values, values, identity, projection and image. This article contributes to enrich the application model of reputation theory that generally applied to Corporate Public Relations rather than Government Rublic Relations communication.
