Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the types of directive speech acts found in the movie Thunderbolt. This descriptive qualitative research focuses on the utterances produced by characters in the film, with direct speech acts serving as the main data source. Data were collected through an observational method using a non-participatory technique. The data analysis applied Sudaryanto’s (2015) method of identifying language elements, while the theoretical framework was based on Searle’s (1979) classification of directive speech acts. The findings show that the characters frequently employed directive speech acts to influence others’ actions. Out of 57 identified utterances, 20 were categorized as asking, 15 as requesting, 5 as ordering, 5 as commanding, 5 as giving advice, 5 as begging, and 2 as inviting. The most dominant type was asking. These speech acts were primarily used to give instructions, request help, and express urgency, especially in high-pressure scenes. This research offers insights into the use of directive speech acts in film dialogues and highlights their relevance to real-world communication and interaction.

Abstract

This study examines how gendered power struggles are represented through the female protagonists of Fair Play (2023) and Radioactive (2019). Both narratives center on Emily and Marie Curie who navigate male-dominated professional environments shaped by patriarchal norms and institutional hierarchies. The purpose of this comparative study is to deepen feminist readings of contemporary and historical female figures while fostering critically empathetic engagement with visual narratives. The research utilizes a comparative critical analysis framework, drawing on the theories of Judith Butler, Michelle M. Lazar, and bell hooks to explore how institutionalized misogyny, emotional labor, and resistance are constructed on screen. The findings reveal that both protagonists experience layered forms of marginalization, including workplace bias, emotional burden, and social surveillance. Yet, each asserts agency, Emily through reclaiming her dignity in the corporate world, and Marie Curie through intellectual defiance in academia. This study contributes to feminist film criticism by highlighting the emotional cost of women’s survival within gendered structures and underscoring the need for more intersectional and humanized portrayals of female agency in media.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of the Quizlet application in teaching vocabulary to eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Cikande, Indonesia. The study addressed the persistent challenge of limited vocabulary mastery in English classrooms, where traditional teaching methods often dominate and technology integration remains minimal. Using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, two classes participated: the experimental group (n = 42) received vocabulary instruction through Quizlet, while the control group (n = 42) was taught using conventional methods. Both groups completed pre-tests and post-tests to measure vocabulary knowledge, including meaning, form, and usage. Statistical analyses, such as normality, homogeneity, and independent sample t-tests, were conducted using SPSS version 30. Results showed that the experimental group’s mean score increased from 54.64 to 83.57, while the control group improved from 66.43 to 75.60. Despite starting from a lower baseline, the experimental group achieved greater gains, indicating a significant difference (p < 0.05) between the two groups. These findings confirm the positive impact of Quizlet on students’ vocabulary learning. The study concludes that Quizlet proved to be an effective and engaging tool for improving students’ vocabulary mastery and recommends integrating Quizlet into English vocabulary instruction to enhance motivation and learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ ability to identify and interpret figurative language in the old literature short story “The Nightingale and the Rose” by Oscar Wilde. Figurative language such as metaphor, simile, symbolism, personification, and hyperbole plays an essential role in conveying deeper meanings within literary works. However, students often face challenges in understanding these elements due to complex language structures and cultural contexts. This study employed a mixed-methods descriptive approach, combining qualitative interpretation of students’ analyses with quantitative coding to calculate the frequency of figurative language types. The participants were 17 sixth-semester English Department students at STKIP Muhammadiyah Sungai Penuh. Data were collected through guided literary analysis tasks. The findings revealed that students showed varied comprehension levels: metaphor (58.83%) and simile (52.94%) were the most accurately identified, while symbolism (23.52%) remained the most difficult. The study suggests that guided reading and literary discussion significantly enhance students’ interpretative skills. Effective teaching strategies are needed to help learners appreciate figurative language in old literature.

Abstract

This study explores the pragmatic meanings embedded in the traditional ceremonies of the Batu Bara Malay community as expressed through English descriptions. These rituals are rich in cultural values and communicative intentions. However, they have rarely been examined from a linguistic perspective that focuses on language use in context. The main objective of this research is to investigate how ritual expressions such as blessings, symbolic utterances, and culturally marked instructions are conveyed in translated or interpreted English texts. Using a qualitative descriptive method grounded in speech act theory and ethno-pragmatics, data were collected from four primary sources: interviews with cultural figures (35%), ritual observations with audio-video recordings (30%), bilingual document analysis (25%), and field notes on the ceremonial context (10%). The results indicate that 67% of English translations partially retained the original communicative force, 23% showed significant meaning shifts, particularly in indirect speech acts and politeness strategies, and only 10% fully preserved the original sociocultural intentions. These findings reveal the complexity of maintaining cultural meanings in cross-linguistic communication and the potential for meaning loss during translation. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of cultural pragmatics in multilingual translation and highlights the importance of culturally sensitive translation practices. It concludes that such practices are crucial to preserving the sociocultural integrity of local traditions and promoting more effective intercultural understanding.

Abstract

The integration of digital media in English language teaching (ELT) has been widely recognized for improving students’ motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes. However, few studies have examined how students perceive the absence of such media in their classrooms. This study investigated the perceptions of eighth-grade students at SMPN 13 Surabaya regarding the lack of digital media in English language learning. Guided by the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, this quantitative study employed a structured 20-item questionnaire involving 48 participants. Data were analyzed using validity and reliability tests, descriptive statistics, and Pearson correlation in SPSS version 29. The results showed all items were valid and reliable (Cronbach’s Alpha: 0.824 for Media Use; 0.956 for Teaching Quality). Students generally viewed their teachers’ performance positively (M = 3.11) despite the infrequent use of digital media (M = 3.00). The correlation between media use and teaching quality was positive but very low and not statistically significant (r = 0.168, p > 0.05), possibly due to the small sample size and teachers’ adaptability to conventional methods. These findings highlight that while teacher competence remains central to teaching quality, integrating digital media can further enrich classroom engagement and learning effectiveness.

Abstract

Students’ writing does not always show significant improvement despite receiving feedback from the teachers in writing class. Furthermore, some challenges faced by teachers and students in the feedback process include limited time for teacher reviewing and for students reviewing the feedback, and the curriculum constraints that must be followed. Most of the previous research focused on one type of feedback and study teacher and peer feedback separately. However, this study shifts the focus toward students’ insights and preferences on both types of feedback. Specifically, it explores three areas: students’ insights into teacher feedback and peer feedback, and how students integrate and prefer both types of feedback. The population consisted of 205 second-semester students in the English Education Program enrolled in 2024 who had taken a writing subject and had experienced both teacher and peer feedback in the writing process. As sample, 64 students met the research criteria and completed the questionnaire. Data were collected through close-ended questionnaire, developed from Nicol & MacFarlane-Dick (2006) seven principles of good feedback practice. The results were analyzed using percentage. It showed that the students saw the feedback from teacher and peers can complement each other in helping them improve their performance in writing class. They believed that the teacher’s feedback as detailed, clear, and reliable while peer feedback can support active learning, collaboration, and critical reflection. Although sometimes the students had conflicting feedback between teacher and peer, they could apply the most useful feedback in revising their work.

Abstract

EFL learners make efforts to learn speaking skills in order to communicate in the global world. Through speaking, they are able to express their feelings and thoughts. However, there are always some challenges faced by ELF learners in learning speaking, so that teachers play critical functions as they are most commonly used as prompters as well as feedback providers to motivate them to speak. The purposes of this study were to analyze the teacher’s strategies in teaching speaking to 29 students at SDIT Darul Qur'an Mulia, as well as to recognize the impacts of the strategies implemented. The writers applied qualitative research, and the case study was chosen as the design of study. To collect data, the writers conducted classroom observations to find out the teaching speaking strategies used in classroom teaching. Then, the writers conducted interview to discover the strategies’ impacts on students speaking skills by delivering questions to the teacher. As a result, there were seven types of strategies implemented to teach speaking, namely live listening, writing task, task repetition, drilling, dialogue, discussion, and conversation strategies. Further, based on the interview results, students showed positive responses to the implemented speaking strategies. Moreover, the impacts of the teacher's speaking strategies discovered include encouraging students to think positively, get more involved in learning, improve their speaking skills, and enjoy the learning process more. Therefore, the results suggest that incorporating interactive and student-centered approaches should be considered in teacher training and curriculum development to enhance students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

This study investigates how language is used to construct positive travel experiences in online reviews of tour services in Central Java, Indonesia. It aims to reveal the linguistic and pragmatic strategies through which international tourists express satisfaction, gratitude, and interpersonal warmth in digital communication. Drawing upon Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 1992) and Politeness Theory (Brown & Levinson, 1987), 150 English-language TripAdvisor reviews written by foreign travelers who had participated in tour programs across major destinations in Central Java were analyzed qualitatively through discourse-pragmatic interpretation. The analysis focused on evaluative expressions, politeness markers, and narrative framing that revealed the writers’ affective stance. Findings show that reviewers frequently employed expressive lexical choices, intensifiers, and positive adjectives (e.g., amazing, helpful, friendly) to strengthen affective meaning. Pragmatically, tourists often used direct appreciation, collectivist expressions, and culturally sensitive compliments (e.g., thank you so much, we truly appreciate it) to establish solidarity and warmth. These linguistic strategies demonstrate how reviewers not only evaluate tour services but also enact politeness norms and rapport-building within digital discourse. The study concludes that online reviews extend traditional Indonesian values of sopan santun (courtesy) into digital interaction, reinforcing Central Java’s image as a hospitable and culturally respectful destination in global tourism communication.
