The author seeks, describes, and analyzes the data. The data is taken from the narration and dialogue of the short story which is related to the research. The theory used in this research is the post-colonial theory from the post-colonial theory expert, Homi K. Bhabha. The occurrence and phenomena of hybridity in form of ambivalence and mimicry in the short story used to determine the main character’s identity reflected in the story, based on Bhabha’s definition of mentioned term. The results of this study show the existence of identity crisis in which the main character, Ted, couldn’t sure which identity he belongs to. Ted has a “defective” identity where he accepted Western superiority but didn’t let go his Eastern roots, trapped in his own dilemma in achieving his identity.

Abstract

Aphasia is a language disorder caused by brain damage and makes the patient lose or impair language skills. One of the diseases which often cause people to experience aphasia is stroke. In this study, the researchers observed the characteristics of language impairment of Sarah Scott. She’s a young woman suffering from Broca's aphasia after stroke. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method on the utterances she produced in SymphUK YouTube channel as the data source. In collecting the data, the researchers watched and transcribed the utterances containing the language disorder. The analysis used the theory of Hallowel (2017) on the characteristics of Broca's aphasia and Ardila (2014) about the linguistics defects in aphasia. The finding shows that the most dominant characteristic was dysnomia, literal (phonemic) paraphasia, and agrammatism among twenty-six utterances. Then, the other characteristics that also appeared were disfluency, repetition, and telegraphic speech. Furthermore, the levels of language-impaired in Sarah Scott were morphemic, morphosyntactic, and phonetic. Thus, the following study should cover more subjects with different age, gender, and language to see whether more variation of characteristics of Broca's aphasia appears in different contexts.

Abstract

With the purpose of understanding the pandemic issue that is currently experienced by almost all countries, this library research examines American films with a pandemic theme to find out the reason for using this theme in films and to identify the symbol of pandemic shown in the films. By observing the dialogs and scenes in Outbreak (1995), I am Legend (2007), Carriers (2009), Contagion (2011), and The World War Z (2013), this textual analysis study utilizes the theory of representation to interpret the pandemic in the films. The results showed that the pandemic issue can be considered a promising theme because the concept of the theme includes interesting scenes such as the emergence of infectious disease, rapid virus transmission, high mortality rates, and challenges in overcoming pandemic. These scenes form a pattern – confusion, panic, emergency, survival, and treatment that can be the hallmark of a pandemic-themed film. In addition, the results of the study also suggested that films about pandemics can symbolize the reality of human’s life which is reflected through the portraits of greed, heroism, and hope.

Abstract

HOTS were three upper cognitive processes of Bloom's revised taxonomy by Anderson and Krathwohl (2001) which consisted of analyzing, evaluating, and creating. The objectives of this research were (1) to know the distribution of HOTS in English teacher-made test (2) to evaluate the relevancy of the English teacher-made test with the competencies in English simplified syllabus; (3) to know the reason for less appearance of HOTS in the English teacher-made test. This research focused on English teacher-made tests for grade X and grade XI in the academic year of 2020/2021 at the senior high school number 6 and senior high school number 11 in Bengkulu city. This study adopted a mixed-method as the research design. The first result displayed that HOTS obtained lower distribution rather than LOTS and MOTS in English teacher-made tests for grade X and grade XI at both schools. The second result showed that the English teacher-made tests for grade X and grade XI at both schools were relevant to the English simplified syllabus. The last, the reason for less appearance of HOTS in English teacher-made test at both schools came from two aspects. From the teachers' aspect, they needed more HOTS professional training to improve their understanding of HOTS. From the students' aspect, they needed to practice and learn more about HOTS questions, because most students could not work with HOTS questions.
